Tooth brushing

So when at the dentist yesterday for us, we asked when to start brushing ds' teeth and we were told now (he's almost 15 months). Now, we have the little rubber banana toothbrush and he loves that, but I tried to use a toothbrush with the yummy berry toothpaste and he was having NONE of that.... Any recommendations?

Keep doing it. He's just not used to it. Even just the tiniest but if toothpastes at a time and build up over time. Try to do it a few times a day too. I started earlier with my kids, but I would do it after every bottle at first.

You're using fluoride free toothpaste right?

Tooth brushing

We started at about a year when she had about 4 teeth. I started with the one that you put your finger in with fluoride free paste and I would brush for her. As she got older prob at about 15 months we gave her a little brush. I would brush her teeth well first and then I let her do it. And by her doing I mean she plays with it and sucks the water and paste off.

I started at a year with the banana one... and then moved up around 15-18 months to a regular small toothbrush. I use Tom's toothpaste with fluoride -- I asked my ped if i should be using fluoride and she told me yes. Is there a reason ppl are not using fluoride?

You usually don't use fluoride toothpaste at first bc they don't know how to spit it out and swallowing it could upset their tummy. We didn't switch to fluoride toothpaste until he was about 3.5 or 4 when he knew to spit it out and not swallow it.

I give DS his toothbrush with no toothpaste on it. Every once in a while I will put the baby toothpaste on it, but he really doesn't like it. As long as he is brushing I'm happy.

Re: Tooth brushing

DS who is 20 months has been using a regular toddler tooth brush and tooth paste for a while now. He wanted to do what his big sister was doing. We never even used the banana one with him. He has a cookie monster tooth brush and a minions one.

Interesting. When I brought this up to my pediatrician she said its no big deal and said to just use a pea sized or smaller amount of paste. Can someone recommend toothpaste that I should try?

We started at 9 months. He has eight teeth already. I started with a regular baby sized Mam tooth brush. He loves it haha. I brush his while I brush mine and he gets a kick out of it. Maybe try that???

Fluoride is a neurotoxin, so it's best to avoid.

We started with his first tooth, I didn't use a toothbrush right away cause it was only 1 tooth and then 2 (I used that toothbrush that u put on ur finger.) Then once he started having more teeth, we started using a toothbrush. He never really gave us any problem unless he was sleepy.

How about getting a toothbrush with his favorite character? Also maybe he'd do better with a different toothpaste flavor?

The AAP, you know, the association of Pediatricians that earned medical degrees, just changed their recommendation last year to say that all kids over 1 should have their teeth brushed with a "grain of rice" size bit of toothpaste... that the benefits achieved from exposing the teeth to fluoride outweigh any risks of them ingesting such a small amount.

AAP Info

You'll see some conspiracy theories on here about fluoride being a neurotoxin but I'm going to go with Pediatricians on this one... been using the toothpaste on DS since 1 and at 2.5 he now understands to spit it out while we brush.

Yes, it's a neurotoxin if you ingest a dangerous amount. A rice-sized bit of toothpaste (or vitamin) is a very controlled amount.

I've always used Jack and Jill toothpaste. Flouride free which we actively avoid and it comes in like 6-7 flavors. I get on Amazon.

Tooth brushing

Thanks all!!! He loves the banana one, and the issue with the regular one is that he won't let me do it, he takes the brush from me and wants to do it himself.... Except it's a brush and to him brushes are for hair, lol. Will just keep trying on this. Thanks again! Some great ideas!
