That price is a great price for Plainview.

I grew up there and my Dad's house isn't far from that area.

Looks like there is no basement thoguh.

yea but a dormer costs $100K to start with! 1 bath and no basement... that's no bargain.

if the house was in mint condition, I would say yea, that's a good price for the area. but it very clearly needs work and major updating. they even list it as "good" condition... and we all know what that means Chat Icon

It is a lot lower priced than other things in the area though, so if you wanted to be in that are which is conveinent to shopping, the LIE & Northern State & in a good school district, it is a good opportunity.

Also, if it is a couple without kids, 1 bathroom & no 2nd floor might be fine.

why would you buy a house and think about putting a dormer on it ri8ght away. If its 2 people, 3 bedrooms is more than enough

from the pics, it looks as if the washer/dryer is in one of the bedrooms (not in a closet either) and that room looks very small, I dont think you could market it very well as a bedroom.

that being said, it is a beautiful area - but $389 is alot of money for it imo

Re: Plainview $389

Thats just what I am saying. It says it is a 3 bedroom, but one bedroom has a washer and dryer in it. It doesnt have a basement or an upstairs so there is no where to go. I understand you are paying for the area, but I think it is over priced for that type of house

Re: Plainview $389

If Plainview is your desired location and your budget is $500k and you want to do a dormer and renovations this is the house for you. But if you only have a budget of $389, don't look in Plainview or this house.

I agree - I have a budget of $389K and won't look in Plainview because I know my $$ can go further elsewhere.

Again, I agree. You are paying mostly for location and school district when you buy a house. Plainview is very desirable location to those commuting, close to LIE, NSP, SOB, has a hospital in town, good shopping and houses of worship. This is the cheapest price I've seen for a house in Plainview, in any condition, in a long time.

A similar size house next door to my father's house, but with a basement, very clean but not very recently updated, and on a corner sold for $489K last month. The kitchen is tiny and at least 20 years old and the bath at least 10 years old. Very small bedrooms. Even in this market (this summer) it was only on the market for 4 weeks.
My Dad lives about a half a mile away from the house for sale. He's closer to the synagogues and for years now people have offered him cash on the spot for his house.

Yes, you might get more house elsewhere but the location (especially proximity to NYC), quality of school district, etc. might be sacrficed. To each his own but for Plainview, it really is a bargain.

Re: Plainview $389

I agree with you completely on this one, Taw-wee-zah..

I would sacrifice alot for location and school district, that's why I am in Syosset with a modest home ( for the area), but close to all -LIE, NS ( 2 blocks away) house of worship (the Temple I will be joining is around the corner), shopping - Shoprite, bed/ bath, Gap ,Ann Taylor, TJ maxx with in a a couple minutes drive). one of the top districts on the Island and a 4 minute drive to Hicksville train station..

MY Dh grew up in Woodmere and never realized how great it is for it not to take 20 minutes to get to a parkway....

If you want Plainview, I have not seen that price for any house since we looked an that was 3 years ago...
