Booking hotels while on the road?
Driving to Disney in April from Maryland with a 5 and 2yr old. Hoping to stay somewhere in NC/SC en route but want to be able to drive as far as we can before we stop. What's our best bet for booking a hotel while on the road? Is there a good app? Do you just watch for billboards and call as you're driving? Something else? This is all new to me!

Re: Booking hotels while on the road?
We sometimes book when we are en route but we know which areas we would stop beforehand. i.e. if we are driving to NYC, we will stop in either S NJ around Mt Laurel or central NJ in Princeton area.
I would map out your route and pick 3 points that you might stop.

We personally try to use starwood points and use our SPG app. I also have the kayak app that links you to hotel websites or 3rd party booking sites like orbitz. It's pretty easy to book right beforehand.
We once got stuck in a blizzard somewhere in NC. I found a Hilton garden inn and booked. We saw tons of cars getting stuck on the roads. I remember the hotel was like 5 miles from where we were at and wondering if we would make it to the hotel.

Booking hotels while on the road?
Before we had cell phones and gps, we would drive until we felt like stopping and look at the road signs. Now I will look at what is coming up on the gps, or I will search a hotel chain I like on my phone. I always make the reservation online, even if we are almost there.

Thats tricky.
We are driving down next month and are staying in Florence SC, which is a little past the halfway point (By recommendation of someone we know who has done this drive multiple times).

My parents drive to Disney about every other year and this is where they stay every time.
Dh drives until he is tired and then asks me to find a hotel nearby with good ratings squally using yelp. In the past we have driven with dogs so we were limited to certain chains that accepted dogs.

Booking hotels while on the road?
One thing to keep in mind is if you are driving during a school break you may want to have a reservation ahead of time. We drove to Florida in February a couple years ago. On the drive down we made hotel reservations on the fly. We did the same thing on the way back north. The problem we encountered on the way back was that we were traveling president's weekend so many of the hotels I tried to get reservations at were booked. We had to drive further north than I really wanted to. It was late and we were all cranky by the time we found a hotel.
My advice is to have an idea of where you want to stop and scope out some hotels in those areas ahead of time.
Have fun!!

Agreed.
This is our first time driving and I have heard the same advice. We are traveling Presidents Week and it was strongly suggested that we book in advance.

Re: Booking hotels while on the road?
Interesting, thanks everyone. Not traveling during school breaks so I'm not TOO concerned about that. I'm surprised that there isn't something more high tech out there to do this, guess I'll do the roadside/yelp/Google trick, seems like a lot of work!
