What are the visiting hours like? Do most people keep the baby with them all day, or do they go to the nursery?

Do people just pop in ? If so, What do you do if breastfeeding , door lock or sign?

One of my concerns is people walking in while I am trying to feed.

I just gave birth at Manhasset. There is no set visiting hours. People can come at any time. I didn't do anything while I was breastfeeding. I used a cover. When people came they usually knocked on the door and I would ask for them to give me a few minutes if I needed it.

I don't know what most people do but I kept the baby with me all day and night.

I did. There are no visiting hours. The nursery was empty during the day and packed at night. They are very amenable to having the babies in the nursery at night and encourage you to try and get some sleep which is great except that the beds are absurdly uncomfortable. I didn't sleep even with the baby in the nursery.

I didn't breastfeed, but yes, the nurses and PCAs come and go as they please.

You can pull the curtain for privacy when people knock or come in. The staff will announce themselves and why they are there before entering. As for visitors hopefully they knock too.
If you send your baby to the nursery just be very specific about feeding preferences otherwise they will just give the baby formula.

24 hour visiting hours. A heads up, you can choose to not be listed in the hospital directory, this would force people to call you before they visit to obtain your room information (you can at least get a heads up that way). Also you can just keep your door closed or pull the curtain, too. I am sure most people will knock if you did that. Or just tell people who you think will visit to call ahead of time.

The baby was with us most of the day. But they were very liberal with the nursery. No pressure was put on us. We roomed in the first night (I delivered late and had a long recovery so I wanted to spend time with him)...I sent him to the nursery the 2nd and 3rd nights. If you choose not to room in, they ask you in advance if you want them to bring you the baby to BF during the night or if you are OK with formula.

One suggestion, tell the nurses immediately if you want to be seen by a lactation consultant. For whatever reason, I was unable to be scheduled in. As a new mom, I was kind of PO'd about that especially because our insurance only covered the cost while in the hospital... Which I found out after the fact.

Also, it is a teaching hospital so be prepared to be bothered by some student or resident knocking on your door every 30 minutes to introduce themselves and ask you how you are feeling....VERY annoying while in the maternity unit and especially annoying during active labor..."How they hell do you think I am feeling???? " hahahaha.

One more thing, if you deliver late - you'll be eating Au Bon Pain unless you ask them to reserve a meal for you. The cafeteria closed by the time I delivered. I was STARVING!!!!!!!! Not the end of the world, but just something I never thought to prepare for.

When you check in they ask you if you are breastfeeding or formula feeding. Tell them you are doing both.

For some reason if you tell them just breastfeeding they will refuse to give you formula unless is a script is written by a doctor.

Also, they don't provide pacifiers anymore. If you want your baby to have one, bring your own.

You can refuse to be seen by the students. I wish I did. They got an O2 level on me that they considered "low" (it was not low and it was an hour after my section). This led to a barrage of unnecessary tests and I hardly saw my baby the entire time I was there. Not 100% her fault because my OB is an asshat, but give me a flucking break.

So, you can totally tell them to eff off if they come in.

They have pacifiers and will give if you aren't breastfeeding. The first nurse I got said they didn't have any, but the second gladly handed one over once I said I wasn't breastfeeding.
