Can this be a sign of a UTI?
I'm so upset. I got a call from the school nurse yesterday saying that DD was fine but that she had 2 'accidents'. So I right away think, ok she fell on the playground or bumped her head with another kid, etc. No, it was pee accidents
DD is 5 She has been potty trained for pee since 2 ish. Never an accident, even at night. Never.
The nurse said the teachers sent her down to the nurse to change her clothes (they keep spare clothes in their cubbies) and all was fine. She told the nurse nothing hurt, it didn't hurt to pee, and that she was just busy "doing her work" and forgot to go to the potty. Fine. But then it happened AGAIN a few hours later. Which is why the nurse called me just to give me the heads up.
When DD got home yesterday I questioned her about it- and at first she didn't want to talk about it. I could tell she was kind of embarrassed, ashamed, etc.
But she finally opened up and just said that she was so busy doing her work that she didn't have time to go to the bathroom. I explained to her that she just has to raise her hand and the teacher would never deny her going to the bathroom no matter what they were doing at the time. (i know this for a fact)
I'm just so confused and upset. Do you think this warrants a visit to the ped? Could she have a UTI and just have no other symptoms and somehow it's causing her to wet herself?
She hasn't done it since being home last night and this morning. She woke up and went to the bathroom normally, no pain, no complaints and no accidents.
I'm baffled...

Maybe she just really was distracted. I'd ask the teacher to keep an eye on her today and remind her to go to the bathroom if it's been more than a few hours. With a UTI there's usually pain, or the sensation of having to go to the bathroom without actually needing to go...kind of the opposite of an accident.
I'd try not to worry. Give it another day and keep an eye on her for fevers or other symptoms.

Can this be a sign of a UTI?
This just happened to my friends DD, she is in DS's k class. She had a few accidents at school and then at home. All times she said it didn't hurt when she went but a few days later she said it did. She brought her in and she was diagnosed with a UTI.
I would bring her in, then again I am one of those moms who bring them in when they start showing fevers. I am just a worrier like that.

Re: Can this be a sign of a UTI?
I don't know about a UTI. Meaning, I don't know much about them.
But I remember when my nephew started kindergarten he was so enthralled and so busy doing his work, playing with friends during fun time, or trying to get all of what the teacher is instructing them to do done so that he could "look good" and be a "good student" that he would hold it! And hold it! And finally, he had two accidents one time! And when they called and we later discussed it with him he said the same thing. My brother did what you did and he never had a problem again... He was like Christopher, no matter what, and I appreciate that you want to be a good student but you have to get up and go pee! LOL! I don't mean to laugh but I just remember thinking man this kid likes school and doesn't want to miss a BEAT!
So, I do not know much about the whole UTI thing and it could be a symptom. I don't think it would hurt to call the ped and explain the situation -- maybe they can tell you one way or another, give some better insight. But I do recall, socially, no health prob the SAME thing happening with Christopher.
At least now, he just turned 14, he's an honor student - so that's good!
I do feel bad for her -- I can understand why she would feel ashamed. Poor thing!

UTI would definitely be my number one thought as well. See how it goes today. If it happens again take her in, can't hurt.

Yes I told her that I spoke to her teacher and that she said it's ok to go to the bathroom no matter WHAT they are doing. I reinforced it a few times this morning before school. I'm super paranoid of her doing it again.
Her teacher is a DOLL- an absolute doll- she is the epitome of what you would want in a Kindergarten teacher. I know she would NEVER EVER make a child feel they couldn't use the bathroom.
I think it may be what you said- that she is trying so hard to make a good impression and be a good girl- especially with Christmas coming and all...
I am going to see what transpires today, keep my fingers crossed, and if anything else unusual happens I'll call the ped to see what he says.
Never a dull moment!

I remember Kindergarten for Christopher literally like it was yesterday -- I know that sounds so cliché, but it's true. And on Sunday, we celebrated his 14th birthday and he is a good four inches taller than me - and I'm tall!!! It is INSANE.
I held him when he was born. I cannot even deal with how fast it is all going.
She sounds like such a great little girl! No doubt she is so studious because of her daycare and preschool experiences - I bet that made her transition amazing into Kindergarten in terms of being prepared and being able to take on all the exciting learning.
I remember when I was in Kindergarten we had a bathroom in the room - it was a onesie and there was a sign on the outside with a red light and a green light. Obviously, you turn it to the red light when you are in there, and turn it to the green when no one is in there.
Yeah, I got confused by that. I CLEARLY remember on like the first or second day of school looking at it and going, if I turn it to the green side that means I'm GOING pee??? Or does that mean the room is open?? Green means go?? Going pee?? LITERALLY this is my five year old mind. And then I'm like, but red means stop. Red light means stop so have I stopped peeing??
LMFAO!!!!
Needless to say I overthought myself into such a confusion that I had to pee so bad I just went in, left the red light green light sign with the green facing out and started to pee. With that, another student - A BOY - opened the door totally unsuspecting. I shouted, he shouted, we were both horrified. The teacher freaked.
I haven't been the same since.

That's a classic story. Ah the life of a 5 year old!

Re: Can this be a sign of a UTI?
Honestly, totally normal at that age. I would have accidents quite often at 5-6. It was a 2 fold issue. One, I was so busy doing whatever I was doing that I didn't want to take the time to go to the bathroom. And two, my parents were mid-divorce and it was really hard on me. I wouldn't be concerned just remind her that she needs to make sure she tells when she needs to go potty and that she can continue what she is doing when she gets back, that the activity will still be there when she gets back from the bathroom. I think if it were a UTI, she would have other symptoms (pain, fever even).
