Teaching your children a second language
I would love for my 3 year old to start learning a 2nd language young to try and avoid the difficulty I have learning another language. I know some spanish from school but not enough to teach him, I don't know anyone that speaks fluently and he's not in school yet. Is there any way to teach him Spanish?

Dh is fluent in Spanish and has been reading to dd1 since she was only a few months old in Spanish. She knows a good amount of words and is 2 1/2. Do you have a babysitter that speaks Spanish?
They also offer Spanish classes for toddlers, mostly through playing at that age. I think there's one in garden city area and Dix hills. I'd google it.
You could also do the little pim DVDs. It's like Rosetta Stone for toddlers. It's cute.

There is a place in Bellmore that teaches Spanish. I've considered signing my DD up for a class.

I'm sure there is an online learning program. Or you could probably find a tutor willing to teach your toddler Spanish. I know DDs school starts teaching Spanish at age 3.

Re: Teaching your children a second language
Start with what you know, the basics.. numbers, colors, letters, basic words (hello, goodbye, water, food, dog, cat, etc.)
I am far from fluent but know enough to teach my son the basics. What i don't know, or don't remember i just look up online and him and I are learning vocab together. Also, there are many toys/apps that are multilingual. Change the setting sometimes and see what happens.

Re: Teaching your children a second language
I love the idea. If my son wasn't in an amazing preschool that teaches him different languages I would not be able to really teach him much except for the conversational French that I know.
At school he is learning Mandarin and Spanish.

I have the app duolingo and we work on Spanish together. I took it for seven years so I help them.

I found a day care where they are primarily Spanish speaking. You can also see if your district has a dual language program.

We are using the app duolingo to teach the kids spanish. I started with the basics, like the alphabet, numbers, colors, body parts.

Lol don't worry, I spoke a good amount of Portuguese in pre-k/kindergarten because our tenant and her kids were Portuguese...but once they moved I never spoke it again and can't remember a single word.

I'm like, Mandarin Monday's??
He doesn't even know what his NOSE is yet (this was when he first started and was real young)... I'm like Mandarin??
So THEN he starts coming home speaking this!!! And I have NOT A CLUE as to what he is saying. So, finally, I call my cousin's wife (who is Chinese and speaks Mandarin) and I'm like, please tell me what the heck this, this, and this means.
She's like oh wow! He's saying, hello mama -- how are you? I love you mama!

Re: Teaching your children a second language
That's awesome. My daughter learns Mandarin, as well as French, at her Preschool. She loves speaking Mandarin, she's picking it up so quickly, it's amazing - the French, not so much, lol.
It's not so much about knowing the language at such a young age, but teaching young kids a second language helps brain development and helps them "learn to learn". It's so great that preschools do this.
As for the original question, at such a young age, conversation can be hard in English, lol, so for a second language that isn't spoken fluently at home, just start with the basics, as you would English. Colors, objects, foods, feelings, etc. Should be easy to do with Flash Cards, songs and games. Songs are great learning tool for 3 year olds!

The language they are learning now will be lost. It must be reinforced and used daily.

The language they are learning now will be lost. It must be reinforced and used daily.
From what the director at my son's school told us and the research I did to better understand why they do this...
It's not so much about truly knowing the language at such a young age, or then using it for the rest of your life, but more about teaching young kids a second language as a way to assist in brain development and teach them "learn to learn" capabilities.
And, each school is different, but my son's school is a daycare, preschool, and then private school K-8. So, if I choose to keep him in the school he will continue to learn the languages they are teaching him for many years to come and, as a result, won't "lose it" -- he can then go on and continue it in high school and college also.
