Barefoot Toddler
My DS stays at home all day (ie: not in daycare - but of course goes out here and there) and he hates wearing socks or shoes. I have all hard wood/tile floors with only a few area rugs (one where he plays). I know they say it's best to learn to walk barefoot, but he's got that down to a science by now. Should I be concerned with this? My mother keeps saying he's going to be flat-footed. I don't know what causes that, but my DH is flat-footed so I guess he's genetically prone already. Any thoughts? I'll ask ped at next appt - but it's not for 2 mos.

My older dd has or had flat feet, I'm not sure if she's totally outgrown it but I think it's better. I always forget to ask the ped but her irrepressible said she liked fine. Her physical therapist pointed it out and just said get good shoes like stride rite or pediped but barefoot is best. She said having varied surfaces was good (we have wood, rugs, and those foam mats) and to massage her feet and make a game of throwing pillows and cushions in the floor for her to walk on to strengthen the muscles.

Re: Barefoot Toddler
My son pulls off his socks and shoes too. He is 18 months. First step is to take him to get measured to make sure the shoes are the right size and width.
Not sure how old your LO is, but mine actually listens if I bribe him. I am able to tell him keep your shoes on if you want to go in the car, outside etc. Recently, this seems to do the trick.

Hailey is always barefoot. In the summer she hardly ever wore shoes, even outside. She had so many calluses on her feet. It pissed my dad off so much that she never wore them. But i cant chase her around constantly putting her shoes on.

Yep my DD is 5 and she rips her shoes and socks off the second she walks in to the house. She HATES being shoes. Even outside- all summer long she would be barefoot outside it's fine

Re: Barefoot Toddler
He'll wear his shoes outdoors (although as soon as we get in the car he's yelling 'shoes' - which means take them off haha). But won't wear anything indoors. I have a no shoe in the house rule anyway haha so that is fine but he won't even wear socks! Probably better off to prevent falls (he runs ... constantly). I never even gave it a second thought until Grandma commented :)

My DD is 3 and she still loves to pull her socks off and run around the house barefoot. She seems to like that She can get better traction that way.

Same! DD's are 3 and 5 and are barefoot in the house from the second they walk in the door. It is fine and I actually prefer it - I dont want outside shoes in my house and I am always panicked they will slip while running with socks on.

No one in my family wears shoes or socks at home. I wouldn't worry too much.

Re: Barefoot Toddler
My 3 year old is always barefoot in the house. We also have hard floors. I'm not worried about foot malformation (they say barefoot is best), but I do worry that she will get sick as our floors get cold! She refuses to wear slippers or socks even when the floor is freezing.

Re: Barefoot Toddler
Being flat footed is genetic and has nothing to do with walking around barefoot. That aside, my kids are barefoot ALL the time in the house, they hate wearing shoes and socks unless they are going out. They love the comfort of having nothing confining their feet. They are 2.5 and 7 yrs old.
ETA - My kids don't make it 5 ft into the house before they are ripping their shoes off!

We don't allow shoes in our house and neither of my kids (almost 5 and 3) have flat feet.

Re: Barefoot Toddler
Being flat footed has nothing to do with shoes or no shoes. You are born that way. It's genetic. I find older people believe all sorts of ridiculous wives tales
