What age can you start giving cough medicine?
Poor DD has been coughing all week and it gets worse at night when she's laying down. She's 3.
Is she old enough to take children's cough meds like robutussin or something? Thanks

I think for the most part it's 5-6 years old for cough medicine, we haven't used it yet (DD is 5, DS is 2) but I DO use Benadryl for coughs and it works pretty well and helps both my kids sleep

What age can you start giving cough medicine?
I was told not yet for my 3.5yo although I was told the natural ones like zarbees and Hylands were okay. They're mostly honey so you can even just give a spoonful of regular honey. That's what I did when dd was coughing a lot at night and it seemed to help.

I think it used to be around age 4 but they recently upped it to 5/6 years old.

Also try benedryl. A lot of times the cough is a post nasal drip.
They can have benedryl at 3 but you'll need to get the dose from the dr. Or online they have charts

I've used mucinex on my 3 yr old. I just lowered the dosage accordingly. She survived and felt a hell of a lot better!

DS1 is 2.5 and DS2 is 1 as of a few days ago. He went to the doctor on his first birthday for a bad cough and the doctor said he could have half a teaspoon of mucinex if we wanted to give it. He also recommended honey.

My 3 year old also has a bad cough! We've given Zarbees and since we ran out, a spoonful of honey. Seems to help, at least a little.

My DD is 4.5 and her dr recently prescribed a cough medicine for her. The dosage was like a drop and it actually worked.

Definitely call your ped because as others have stated, the ped will most likely let you use mucinex or something else OTC in the proper dose.
The whole thing with cough meds under a certain age were that people were overdosing their kids. So they had to give it a blanket no.
I am sure it's perfectly safe in the RIGHT dose.

I was told to use Benadryl in case of severe colds. It helps a lot when DS has a non stop runny nose and cough.

We were giving it to DD (shes almost 3) and they werent helping. We took her to the ped and she was given a prescription

Ped suggested this and it seems to work quite well.
My ped also suggested a tablespoon of pure honey. My son is a little over two and I give him local organic honey and it really helps sooth the cough and is a wonderful, natural mucus reducer. Who knew??

This I lowered the dosage of children's mucinex for my DS (he is also 3). Check with your ped.

That stuff is fantastic.
Jude was prescribed that twice -- and wow, VERY effective and no side effects. Like, you know how sometimes medicine can either knock them out or hype them up? Nope. Just made him all better.
