Harendra Singh's Water's Edge restaurant closes as employees walk out

Oh my WORD Chat Icon I just keep thinking of the brides and grooms who have their weddings booked... The fellow LIFer on here who had concerns about a party she had booked at his other location, Singleton's, how did that work out?? I really hope you were able to get your money back because I fear that place is next...

NEWSDAY ARTICLE

Body of article:

The Water's Edge, a popular restaurant and wedding venue in Long Island City operated by indicted restaurateur Harendra Singh, closed Wednesday after employees walked out amid complaints that they hadn't been paid in five weeks.

"It's officially shut down," said one former manager, who asked not to be named. "Everybody is owed money. Purveyors are owed money, and employees are owed money. And he ain't paying."

One of the restaurant's chefs, who also asked not to be named because he is still hoping to collect the pay he is owed, said he went The Water's Edge Wednesday only to find it closed. He said employees had not been paid for four to five weeks and that they were owed thousands.

Newsday made several calls to The Water's Edge Wednesday evening when it was supposed to be open, and no one answered. Early Thursday afternoon, when the doors to the Water's Edge should have been open for lunch, the restaurant was dark and a sign on the front door said "Closed for Renovations." A man, who said he had been hired to remove food from the building, carried metal trays with frozen meat and condiments to a U-Haul truck.

Federal authorities arrested Singh, 56, of Laurel Hollow, last month on charges of bribing a then-Oyster Bay employee in exchange for the town's guarantee of $20 million in loans for two businesses that provide food concessions. He also is accused of fraudulently collecting nearly $1 million in federal disaster aid by falsely reporting superstorm Sandy damage to Water's Edge.

Singh pleaded not guilty to all the charges. He currently is under house arrest and is allowed out just three hours a day to operate his restaurant business, which is based in Bethpage.

Singh's criminal defense attorney, Anthony LaPinta, did not comment. Singh's wife, Ruby, who helps operate the business, did not return a call for comment.

Newsday stories have chronicled how Singh cultivated relationships with Long Island public officials, including paying for trips to the Caribbean and Asia and allegedly providing free meals for Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and others. A Mangano aide and lawyer dispute that he got free meals or travel from Singh, and Mangano has not been charged with wrongdoing.

Singh leases Water's Edge from New York City in exchange for rent based on a revenue formula. After a 2014 city audit found that the rent payments had been improperly calculated, it moved in state Supreme Court in Queens to evict the Singhs' company, Quinn Restaurant Corp., before its lease is up in 2017.

Joseph Goldberg, a Singh attorney in the Water's Edge case, argued in legal filings that the city's calculations are incorrect and that the restaurant has made a good-faith effort to pay back rent. But negotiations with the city over the alleged arrears broke down early this year.

Newsday has reported that, according to records, Mayor Bill de Blasio's 2013 campaign spent $2,613 at Water's Edge for two fundraisers, and his campaign and transition committee received at least $54,651 in donations from Singh, his family and his associates between 2010 and 2013.

this is terrible. I live in the area and this place WAS amazing-- it's gone down-hill in the last year or so. But, the owner seems like a real schiester for lack of a better word.

Hopefully a great new owner comes in and purchases the facility, renovates it and reopens it... and then isn't a complete criminal lol Chat Icon

All I can say is:
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

1. I feel bad for the employees and don't wish this on them

2. I feel bad for anyone who has a booked event.

I booked them for my wedding. Gave them a $5k down payment. The day AFTER I booked them I saw an article about how they were being "investigated". Mind you, this was 5+ years ago.

My father in law paid for the wedding. I called him and we all decided to get the deposit back and cancel that venue. My FIL paid with AmEx, so no matter what we would have gotten the money back. But they gave my FIL a VERY difficult time. Called him names and yelled and screamed at him. (probably because they NEEDED the money).

We saw them circling the drain then. So because of the way were treated I say good riddance. I hope they go to jail.

This has been in the news for awhile. not surprised. It won't be the last of the restaurants in his group to close.

That's ironic and I was going to guess that. I was in court last month and one of the other cases a lady was suing that restaurant over a lost deposit from a cancelled party. I always thought that place was a little shady. Will avoid for sure now. Thx.

I got a TERRIBLE vibe from them in 2010 when we were checking out wedding venues. They were rude, nasty, and the place was meh IMO. After waiting for almost an hour for our appointment and being given attitude the whole time, we walked out and didn't look back. Wow- I don't regret that decision in the least!

I feel so horrible for all these people who had the venue booked and the employees who are going to have to fight for their wages.

I had the party booked at Singletons, its in 2 weeks and I am freaking out... I am going to call other places to see if they can accommodate me at the last min... the manager said earlier that he would not give back my deposit but at this point I don't care... does anyone know if I would be on the hook for the whole thing if I cancel? I hope not!

I dont think you would end up being liable for the balance - you definitely wont get the deposit back as you said, but I dont think they would be able to hold you accountable for the cost of the party with all their legal issues ensuing...

Depends on what your contract says.

There is nothing written on the contract besides the amount of people and the package I chose, date , time etc.

I hope its just the deposit.

My first wedding was at Water's Edge! We actually had a ton of issues that day (maybe because the wedding wasn't meant to be).

Wow! Was this in 2010? I was married there in 2010 and I don't think any investigations were happening yet!

Doesn't he also operate "The Woodlands" in Woodbury?? That was a very popular wedding venue a few years ago. Wonder what's going on now?
