Nap advice

My son is 12.5 months and sleep has always been a struggle for the better part of the year. Since I was so concerned about him getting quality naps when his nighttime sleep was erratic, I would get him to sleep anyway necessary which usually involved wearing him in his baby carrier. That worked fine for us for a long time but now that he sleeps through the night with no issue, I really need to get him to nap not attached to me. I fear I've created a monster who only naps in the car, stroller or carrier and that I'm destined to wear him around until he stops napping. Crib naps are rare and when they do happen, they are no longer than 35 mins. We tried CIO for naps and it was an epic failure.

Any advice?

Have any other moms dealt with crappy nappers even at 1yr+?

Nap advice

I would throw a party if my son napped for 35 mins in the crib.

No advice really as my son is a terrible sleeper and napped. I just do whatever it takes. So if it means going for a car ride or a walk in the stroller, that's what I do.

Nap advice

My 19.5 month old has never napped in her crib. She sleeps well in a crib, just not for naps. She naps in the car, on one of us, on the couch. Actually she may sleep in a crib at daycare. I really don't know lol. But it is what it is.

i would be afraid to lose nap time if I started to change routine. For both dd's i had to rock them to sleep for nap. They slept in their cribs but I had to rock them until they were passed out. We tried CIO for naps but that was an epic failure and we were losing naptime. So I went back to rocking.

Can you bring the stroller inside and nap him in there? that's what I would do.

Nap advice

I would do CIO for naptime. It is so much easier then at night. Go clean the kitchenm, who cares if they scream for an hour. Eventually they will go to sleep .Much easier then doing CIO at night when you just want silence and sleep for yourself too. lol

I usually nurse him in the rocking chair in his dark room with the sound machine on. When he gets sleepy, I will try to put him down in the crib with a paci and leave. If he's already asleep, he will stay asleep for only about 35 mins before waking up screaming and doesn't go back down.

The few times I've tried CIO, I do the same routine, put him down sleepy but awake, leave and he usually screams bloody murder and stands at the foot of his crib until I come back in. I haven't let it go on longer than 30 mins because he gets himself so worked up he starts dry heaving and at that point, it's not worth it to me. I fear that he's too old now at 12.5 months for CIO to be easy.

My 11 month old is a crappy napper still. She will only nap in the crib if she's swaddled. She still takes 3 naps most days bc she takes short naps or gets interrupted. Once in a while she miraculously naps over an hour. Without the swaddle, IF she falls asleep she's back up in under 5 minutes. I've tried letting her cry and gave up after an hour. At night she goes right to sleep in the crib no swaddle,no fussing. I have to soothe her back to sleep an hour later and then I get another hour or two before she ends up in my bed. I feel like I've tried everything and nothing works or lasts.

When I did CIO I noticed that naps were harder than bedtime. I would certainly try again. If he gets himself worked up I would probably go in there, lay him down, pat & shush. Eventully he will tire out and fall asleep.

First thing you need to do is separate nursing from bedtime for naps and night by 20-30 minutes. You're teaching him he needs to eat to fall asleep. Then when he wakes up at 35 mins into the nap, he can't fall back to sleep b/c he would need to eat to fall asleep. Once you separate it, then try again.

For daytime, I've always followed Eat-Play-Sleep so the baby doesn't associate eating to sleeping.

12.5 mo is not too late to teach independent sleep. He needs to learn to sleep on his own!

This is really good advice. He is still reliant on Newborn strategies used to soothe a newborn who has no self soothing skills (Rocking/Sucking). At 12 1-2 months he has the neurological maturity to self soothe, he just needs to be weaned off the rocking chair and nursing until sleepy crutches. You need to break those associations then sleep train him (CIO, Sleep Lady/Sleep Shuffle, there are lots of methods)... It's not too late!

Yes, I agree. What I find crazy is that he is perfectly capable of self-soothing and goes to bed in his crib at night without any issues and without being nursed to sleep. I just can't wrap my head around why he is so resistant to do the same for naps.

Re: Nap advice

Have you given him a toy? I don't know if you put anything in the crib with him yet, but my ds is 17 months and when he gives me trouble for naps I put him down with a stuffed animal that is usually not in his crib. He plays for a little and then falls asleep.

What time does he wakes up for the day? What time are his naps and what time does he go to bed at night?

The drive to sleep is much stronger at night than during the day. Also (supposedly) there are different parts of the brain used for day vs night sleep.
