So Called Experts - Rants
Who are these experts that say don't sleep with your baby on you. Don't bring your baby into your bed because you could roll over or he could fall out. Don't introduce sound, a pacifier or rocking your infant to sleep because that is what they will come to expect. Place your baby in his crib on his back swaddled while he is groggy but not yet sleeping. Put the baby down and let them cry it out as long as they are in a safe place, yada, yada, yada. I want these experts to come to my house and show me it how it is done because none of this s&*t works. I'm on my third night of less than three hours sleep because I am trying all these things and my baby ends up sleeping on myself, my husband or the bed anyway. If this keeps up I am going to literally pull my hair out.
Thank you for letting me rant.

Do whatever you need to do to get sleep!! (Safely, of course)
I said I would never co-sleep and after almost 48 hours of no sleep, guess what, DD was in bed with me and sleeping glorious 10 hour stretches. And she is almost 4 and sleep just fine in her own bed.
In the beginning you do what you need to survive. Figure out what works and do it. We've all been there!

I totally agree! I think the things you mentioned are all best case scenarios. Every baby/kid is so different. I see the differences firsthand now that I have my second.
Honestly, we all need to do what we need to do to get by. I'm in survival mode with a two year old and two mo old!

Do what you need to do!
My DS did not sleep decently until a year old. Even now, at almost 18 months old, he usually fusses at least once a night and sometimes needs to be nursed....
At this time last year, I was getting 2-4 hours a sleep a night. I put him a swing one night when he just wouldn't settle and it was HEAVEN.

Re: So Called Experts - Rants
Unfortunately I have BTDT. Never had my kids sleep with me and while I had a great sleeper for my first child, I went through it with my younger.
He was older, not an infant, but I would just keep putting him back in his bed, not talking with him at all for about a week. I didn't get much sleep but it worked.
Consistency is the key. Put them in their bed and yes, let them cry it out. They will eventually learn that you are not coming back and that is where they should be. If they are not in harm and not making themselves literally sick, then they are not in any harm.

A lot of what you listed (putting baby down sleepy but awake, no rocking, etc) are for older babies. If you have a young baby, do whatever you need to do to get sleep!

Re: So Called Experts - Rants
The only "rules" I followed were the safety ones- like putting her on her back, no blankets in the crib, no bumpers etc
Other than that- all bets were off with DD. She was a horrendous sleeper and pretty much just dozed for 20 min at a pop around the clock for about 6 months of her life!

Aside from the recommendations to help prevent SIDS I ignored all the expert advice- my dd nursed to sleep every night until she weaned at nearly 16 months old.

I did what I needed to do. I listen to it all and take what I need. Babies are not a one size fits all so you need to be flexible.

The first two nights home from the hospital I was crying and wanted to return her because she wouldn't sleep. Then I realized she was fighting the swaddle everyone raves around. The second I let her sleep free she's been a great sleeper ever.
All babies are different!

Look up the guidelines for safe cosleeping. Thankfully there at experts about that too!
Every baby is different and you do what works. My first napped easily, slept in the crib all night although she didn't sttn. I realize I just got lucky. My second spends an hour or two in the crib at night despite several attempts to get her back each night and then ends up in my bed. She fights naps all the time and I still swaddle her for naps at 11 months old! I watch the monitor like crazy but neither of us can function if she doesn't nap so I do what works.

Then do whatever you have to do! Happiest Baby on the Block recommends 5 Ss. Swing, swaddle, shhhh, side and suck. Go nuts with all of it! You'll know when it's time to remove each form of soothing.

Happiest Baby on the Block and Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child saved my life! Newborns are tough!!! It is mostly trial and error, figure out what works but definitely choose safe options. Also splitting the night with my DH and sleeping in a different room than the baby helped tremendously.

He's only 9 weeks.
They go in cycles. At 9 weeks, I would have him lay on my chest while I slept because that was the only way I could get him to sleep at night. Meanwhile, although I was sleeping with him, I wasn't totally sleeping because I was so afraid of rolling on him. One night he actually rolled off of me and was face down in the bed when I realized he fell off. Scared the he ll out of me.
This went on for several weeks. He is now 4 months old (I think 17 weeks) and he goes in his crib at night with no problem. Do you have him in your room still? For some reason, I couldn't get my act together with my second so his nursery wasn't set up so I had him in my room up until 2 weeks ago. I had him in a cradle next to my bed. I started letting him fall asleep on me and then putting him in the cradle. If he woke up, I gave him the binkie and he fell right back to sleep. Then, when he woke up around 4-5, I would let him sleep on me and we would get like another hour or 2. He just got more and more used to sleeping in the cradle. The transition to the crib was fine.
Hang in there. It gets better. Just do whatever it is you need to do to get some rest.

Yes I followed the happiest baby on the block -- I bought the DVD bc I did not have the patience for the book.
It was literally life-saving. My son is the best sleeper.
