How long for a RX to start working?
Hope someone can help me out here ...
I've had a horrible, hacking cough since Sunday. Lots of chest congestion. I went to the doctor (one of the STAT walk-ins) on Wednesday. I got a RX for cough syrup (Promethazine, if anyone is familiar).
24 hours later, I'm still coughing (actually, a little more) and the congestion is not stopping.
Should I have some relief by now?

I had a similar ailment in the beginning of summer and went to urgent care. She gave meds but basically it still had to run its course.

Re: How long for a RX to start working?
DH and i were given that med at a stat med place for a cough and it didn't work at all. After 2 weeks my cough was still so bad that it kept triggering my gag reflex so they gave me prednisone which helped so much.

I also had an awful hacking cough. Couldn't breathe, couldn't sleep, awful. I ended up with steroids, antibiotics and an inhaler. I took that for a full week and didn't feel better at all. After the medicine was over, I started feeling better about 3 days afterwards.

All you got was cough syrup? You prob need an antibiotic, and steroid. Call back there and let them know.

If you aren't getting better you probably need an antibiotic
I have been there many times. I wait and wait thinking it will just run it's course and then I'm deadly sick and drag myself into Stat Health and get an antibiotic and within a day or so I"m SO much better and kicking myself for suffering for so long

Re: How long for a RX to start working?
Do you have a primary care doctor? I would try to go there if you can.
I've been to urgent care and in my experience they are quick to diagnose and many times are wrong.
I had the flu last year and they told me it was a sinus infection, the flu became pneumonia and when I went back to urgent care he said it was just the virus. I knew he was wrong I felt awful, I made my DH take me to the ER for a chest X-ray. And they properly diagnosed and treated me.
Urgent cares are convenient but if you still feel sick I'd follow up with your regular doctor.
Feel better!
