Should I be worried?

In the news today it was reported that the guy who owns the restaurant where I booked DD's Christening (which is in 2 months) got arrested for loan fraud and bribery and under-reporting income to the IRS. Should I be worried that the restaurant will close? I'm not sure if I can do anything at this point because I signed a contract and put down a deposit of a few hundred dollars...

I'm not going to lie, I'd be worried. Did you pay the deposit in cash or by credit card? If you used a credit card, you may have some protection.

Re: Should I be worried?

I mean, at this point, he's prob going to have to go through the channels - they set bail, he makes bail, they set up a next court date to make an appearance, he has already lawyered up, and then the lawyer is prob going to tell him to make a deal - he'll plead guilty, get like what? 2 years or less in a cushy Federal pretty prison that overlooks a lush pasture of deer... He'll go there, only serve like 18 months and be out.

...BUT that whole process, above, will likely take about a year, maybe a little less depending on how quickly he does the plea and depending on if he offers to pay restitution.

NOW, the question, for you and the only reason you care about all that shit above is this: WILL he keep the restaurant open and running while he is going through this process? Does he have partners that will keep it running? These are the things I would be worried about. Like, lawyering up and doing all of this -- getting bail money, etc. is going to get costly, so my thinking is maybe he'll shutter the restaurant or sell it to make money --- BUT, on the flip side, maybe he'll keep it running because he can use every penny he can get and pronto!

The party is two months out? It could go either way.

I think I would request my deposit back and see what they say. Then see if you can book elsewhere. If they don't give you a hard time maybe it'll be worth it to save you the stress. Chat Icon

Actually - he is looking at 30 years. and in Federal you do pretty much all your time.

To the OP - If it is in two months - I wouldnt be worried. I don't think anything will happen in that amount of time.

I'd have a "Plan B' in case something goes wrong in the next two months. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Let me tell you something -- I HOPE you are right because that is what he deserves -- but knowing the way the world works for people like him, it'll go exaaaactly the way I'm saying it.

It's soooooo effed up. Chat Icon

Should I be worried?

I would call and request a refund immediatley and go elsewhere. No need to take chances on such an important event.

Re: Should I be worried?

Ask for a refund and book the party elsewhere or just cancel the party there and book elsewhere. I heard about the case on the radio yesterday.

Should I be worried?

His restaurants have been around forever singletons, woodlands etc I know his wife and kids run them too. I can't see them shutting down in two months I would think he needs to keep them up and running to pay his lawyers,

Re: Should I be worried?

I've worked on a few things there & I would eat my losses and leave. He has had some issues with vendors (liquor, food, etc) & I'm pretty sure it's only gonna get worse with everything going on. Run, don't walk.
