Daycare Issue - Anything I can do?

My DD has a new teacher in her room and she is a very heavy smoker. I actually like the teacher a lot - but she wreaks of smoke every time I am in there. My daughter never smells of smoke (hair/clothes, etc.). I don't think there is anything that can really be done....I am sure she is washing her hands and following all protocol as it's a pretty tight ship that they run. I feel like I shouldn't say anything since nothing can be done. Thoughts?

I'd say something to the director. Your child is getting exposed if it's that strong of a smell.

ITA. That's just not good for the kids and it's not professional so I think it needs to be addressed. I have tons of friends and co-workers who choose to smoke and I never smell it on them like that so there are things she can do to help that and IMO, at work, she should go that extra mile to do so -- especially when that workplace is a childcare center. That just makes it so much more crucial.

If it were me, I would write an email to the director and ask my name not to be used -- but rather the director have a general "this was noticed" kind of discussion with her.

I agree! It's called third hand smoke (I think) and it's very dangerous actually for your child to be breathing it in. I'd absolutely say something.

ETA My FIL is a heavy smoker (not in the house) & his clothes smell like smoke always, but we only see them rarely so I don't confront him about it. However if my children were around him regularly, I would have to say something.

Although I am not sure there is anything that really can be done I would absolutely raise the issue with the Director. Maybe if the Director talks to the teacher there are things she would be willing to do such as bring a change of clothes and change after she smokes, etc.

I would absolutely raise it with the director.

It is not safe for children and infants to be exposed to any level of smoke - even small levels of toxins can have an impact.

Someone who works with children should not be coming to work reeking of smoke.

That would really bother me and is a very sensitive subject to me being that my mom passed of lung cancer and wasn't a smoker.

You can be exposed to third hand smoke (through clothes, etc). I would talk private,y with the director. Not sure what options there would be though.

If you smell it, then the director already knows. But if it bothers you, then raise it to the director.

I would say something as well. If she smells that strongly at pickup in the afternoon it means that she is smoking frequently throughout the day. I can see it being strong in the morning because maybe she smokes in the car on the way in. I left a Ped office because the nurse would come in reeking of cigarette smoke. Being a former smoker myself before I got pregnant, I always took care to wash, chew gum and/or spray myself so to not stink. Working around kids I would think you would be extra diligent.

She prob smokes in her house so all her clothes smell. There's probably not a lot she can do at this point. I guess one would have to stop smoking at home for a while to not smell eventually.
