Those of you who have children with minor food allergies...

I took all three kids to the dr for their yearly physical. My kids are 4.5 year old twins and a 3 year old. I asked the dr to test for nut allergies since we have a severe nut allergy that runs in the family and we haven't given them peanut butter yet. The dr told us she was just going to check for nuts because there would be too much blood involved to test for a whole food panel. Today the Drs office called and apparently they tested for a whole food panel. The nuts didn't come back yet but I was told that all three of my kids are allergic to milk, 2 of them allergic to eggs and one of them allergic to wheat. NONE of my kids have any allergy symptoms that I know of to any of these things. None of it bothers them. They drink milk three times a day. Nothing. They don't necessarily eat eggs but I cook with eggs all the time and nothing. We eat wheat all the time and nothing. No skin reactions, no stomach issues,nothing. Is it possible that all three of my kids have allergies that don't bother them at all? I have to take them to an allergist now, which I have one that we would go to. But I just find this really weird that none of them have reactions. We've been looking to switch peds because they are constantly messing up the billing, we aren't getting bills until a year later and there have been a few other issues as well. Minor, but still issues. Now I'm not so sure they called me with the correct results. If your kid has mild food allergies, what are their reactions, if any?

At around 10 months, my son had a reaction to eggs (egg salad), was tested and dx with an egg allergy; at 2 he had a reaction to 1/2 a peanut, was tested for all main allergens and results showed a very high allergy to peanuts, moderate to tree nuts and eggs, and low allergies to wheat, soy, and milk.

Now aside from very severe eczema which he had for the first 20 months of life (and which, along with reflux for a year, made me think in retrospect that that was a reaction to milk) he never had any sort of reaction to those low-level foods. We were instructed to continue feeding him whatever he was eating. We did and almost three years later, so far so good. Blood tests don't reveal the whole allergy picture and the only true test of an allergy is, unfortunately, a reaction. And in the absence of a reaction, I would not think it is a true allergy. Your allergist will tell you how to proceed, though...

ETA: of course, he doesn't eat nuts as he had a serious reaction, and he doesn't eat eggs in their whole form also because of a reaction IN ADDITION to blood and skin test results. I'm strictly talking about the soy, wheat, and milk which are "on paper" allergies only.

my son sees an allergist. he's allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. confirmed by reaction, blood test and skin test. when we tested for tree nuts using the skin test, beef was on the panel as well. we don't eat a ton of beef, but he's had it and never had a reaction. came back, mild allergy to beef. my allergist said that sometimes the reactions can either be so minimal that you wouldn't really know (mild indigestion) or nothing at all. I suggest you see an allergist. they can review the blood test results with you more thoroughly and tell you how to proceed.

Thanks ladies! We have an allergist that my oldest son had to see at 2.5 and everything came back normal on the skin test. I am going to make an appointment with him for all 3 and see what he says.

Those of you who have children with minor food allergies...

My DS has a mild allergy to Cow's Milk he is 10 months and can't have anything with cow's milk in it because he breaks out in a rash around his mouth. He has no stomach issues from the milk only the rash. THe doctor seems confident he will out grow it. So now he eats only goat's milk dairy products.

The allergist my DS saw said that bloodwork can be inaccurate and you really go by the skin test and clinical symptoms (reactions, etc).

ETA: the allergist also mentioned that the pediatricians usually don't know enough about allergies to determine how severe, etc.

My dd had a mild milk and egg yolk allergy. According to the test she was ok with egg whites, but not the entire egg. She had and has been eating eggs since she was a baby. She went through a challenge test and has both eggs and milk regularly. The only real thing it effects is that she can't get a flu shot.

Thanks everyone! I had no idea the blood tests weren't accurate. I'm not changing their diets or doing anything until we see the allergist. All I wanted was a simple test to see if there may be a reaction to nuts and our dr told us she wasn't doing a full panel because they would have to take too much blood. She said she was testing for nuts and nuts only....this is what it turned into. Thanks for all your replies.

My parents had pretty much the same experience when I was a kid. They were told I was allergic to a million things. Some of them I had very, very mild reactions to. I have always loved ketchup, and the allergist said I was allergic to tomato-based products. My parents just let me keep eating stuff, and I don't have any allergic reactions to any foods whatsoever now.
