a numbers question
how does one calculate the real cost of working v. staying home?
with the cost of our crazy long commute and all the hours spent away from home, especially with a sick elderly person at home... this topic has been kicked around at home a bit.
how/where can i do the math to find out if it's worth staying home and/or how much of a raise to ask for being that i'm about to do that, anyway.
hope that made sense

Um first I am sorry that you would have a sick, elderly relative to care for. But most employers don't really care that you need more money to care for someone. Sadly.

a numbers question
oh, i'm not going to use that number in my conversation with my employer. it's for "behind the scenes" decision making.
i agree, it's not my employer's problem why a specific number would or would not make me happy.
i want to be able to do the math for my person decision.
ETA: the asking for a raise is a long-time coming. and things are serious enough at work that if it's really not worth it, i will walk away. too much stress, too long of a commute, too much time away from home. if being home doesn't cost much or saves money, i'll be all over it if i'm not offered enough money.

a numbers question
Are you married? Is this elderly person related to you? If the answer to both of these questions is no, then I would not even consider leaving my job.
Why not just look for a job closer to home?

I just did this (you can search for my posts from about a month ago). I was getting really frustrated with my old job, especially the commute with having a young child at home (my DS is 10 months next week). I checked craigslist on Monday, got a call on Tuesday, interview Thursday, official offer the following Tuesday. This week was my first full week with the new job, and I can tell you already that the commute is making a HUGE difference for me.
