15 month old behavior

My 15 month old son is a very active little boy. He is generally very happy at home playing and running around. The problem is I can't seem to take him anywhere that he has to sit in a stroller, cart, high chair. He screams his head off in a stroller. Yesterday I tried going to the outlets. He sat for ten minutes eating snacks and then screamed so hysterically I had to take him home. He has plenty of snacks and toys but throws them on the floor and just wants out. This happens all the time. We've given up going to restaurants and this past week he puts up such a fight to sit in his high chair or booster even at home. As soon as he is out of the stroller, cart, etc. he stops his temper tantrum. I try to ride it out but yesterday after 15 minutes of straight screaming I gave up and went home.

Is this normal behavior? A phase? Should I talk to someone? It's making me crazy to not be able to run an errand with him.

15 month old behavior

My DS just turned 16 months and is the same way. He can usually last 30-40 mins tops. I think it's normal. I've thought about getting one of those leash things. I used to think they were ridiculous but now I understand why people use them. To run errands with my DS is very difficult - I try to do everything when he's at daycare...

i could have wrote these exact same words....WORD FOR WORD.
I read your post and said...did I write this???
I am having the same "issues" with my DS who turned 16 months this week.
He is a VERY happy little boy however he is soooo active! is limit is 30 minutes....then its over. I really laughed when you said you were at the outlets and he kept throwing his toys...but this is EXACTLY what I go through with my son.
I am at my wits ends! he will sit in the stroller or Hi Chair and have his snacks but as soon as they are done (or 30 minutes have passed) HES OVER IT. He also is MUCH better as long as he is running around. If he is allowed free running hes a perfect baby lol but obviously that cant be the case all of the time. If he is in the wagon in target...he lasts 20-30 min then he tries to climb out....Its a work out and circus for me to try and entertain him whenever we run errands. Restaurants--OMG forget now....I am too tired to deal with it anymore. He doesnt throw tantrums, but he screams (not a tantrum cry) but a HIGH PITCHED scream when he wants to get out of the hi chair, stroller, wagon or whatever thing he is confined to, and people stare.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I actually got to the point this summer where I started telling people that if we make plans they need to be at my house (instead of visiting someone else's) My yard is mostly grass and flat and completely kid friendly so he has a BALL there and loves to run around, pick up rocks and sticks and play. Works so much better for me. He is INTO EVERYTHING.

Let me add- I have a 6 year old DD and I NEVER dealt with this with her. We took her EVERYWHERE...she was slaways calm....but DS is a maniac! SO THIS IS ALL NEW FOR ME!

I tell him all the time...good thing you are just drop dead adoarble!

ETA: Its funny bc he wasnt like this before walking. He was such calm baby. PEople used to comment all the time how he sits in his infant seat and that their kids would never stay...I used to say ok...hes a calm kid....then he started FULL BLOWN walking at 11 months and I started to notice he was different. However we took him to disney at 12 months and he wasnt NEARLY as crazy as he is now. After we came back fromd isney....he completely turned wild and crazy!

Thanks so much for the replies! We don't even last 10 minutes some days. I'm glad I'm not alone. I walk around and see tons of kids sitting nicely in their strollers and mine is screaming his head off like I'm torturing him.

Serndipity- our play dates are at home now also. It's not worth the stress of going somewhere. My son has always been very active (starting crawling at 5 months) and has always hated the car seat, and stroller. But it was nothing like the tantrums he has been having recently.

I'm a SAHM so sometimes I have to do errands with him. I'm lucky my mom lives 5 minutes away and doesn't mind watching him whenever I need. He spends many afternoons at her house while I do errands and is quite content.

I'm also expecting again in December and think I'm freaking out about having to deal with my son and a new baby. He's so difficult alone, I feel terrible for this new baby.

I'd continue to do errands with him...start short them build up time. I know it's hard but if he thinks he's going to get his way by throwing a tantrum he won't stop.

My son has been like this since 4-5 months. I just try to run errands quickly. Sometimes he lasts 15 minutes, sometimes I get 45. Trying to get him into his car seat is a workout. I literally have to pin him to the seat. I can't be trapped in my house. At some point, I figure it has to get better.

Maybe try baby wearing/ get a toddler carrier? My DS never liked his infant seat or the stroller but was much happier being carried

Re: 15 month old behavior

My little one is like this but does these wonderful high pitched screams when he wants to be done. Unfortunately my husband isn't at home and I don't have any help so he has to do it! Such is life. It's a phase. My almost 7 year old was like this too.

My son's favorite thing is to scream "all done" a million times.

I've tried babywearing since he was a newborn. He has always hated it. I took a break from it for a while but recently tried again and it was just as unsuccessful as when he was younger. I wish he would let me wear him!

I'm going to continue taking him out on short errands. I have no choice some days. I think I get very anxious/upset/frustrated when he starts screaming, which doesn't help. I guess I have to have the mindset that the errand will be 10 minutes and then if I get any longer it's a bonus.

Thanks everyone!

Ugh to bad, but at least you gabe it a try! My dd isn't a fan like my son was so I'm dreading getting to that phase! Short and sweet for the errands and maybe a back up iPhone app if shit hits the fan! Also try not to be to hardon yourself other moms have all been there! ( ineed to remind myself of this daily!)
