Change in insurance during hospital stay
Our insurance is switching on 9/1 which is also my due date. I'm hoping to go on my own in the next few days but I have an induction being scheduled for either Saturday or Sunday night which would most likely have me being in the hospital until 9/1 or later. How does this work with insurance? Any experience? I'm sure it'll end up being a shitshow. Perfect timing lol.

Re: Change in insurance during hospital stay
I would make sure your obgyn and hospital accept your new insurance.
Sounds like it will potentially get messy.
Good luck with L&D!

Call your current insurance company and find out how they bill- my insurance covers labor and delivery as one hospital stay- the stay begins when you check in to deliver.

This is going to get very tricky, and because there was no way to preregister of get prior authorization, I can see how you might end up with out of pocket expenses you didn't anticipate. You will, at the very least have two copays for the hospital stay, one for each insurance, and two deductibles (if you haven't met the deductible for the old insurance yet). Have you verified that both your on and hospital are IN NETWORK with the new insurance?

This may not be a popular suggestion but I would probably beg the dr to induce me a day or 2 earlier to avoid all of this.

Because the doctor usually bills the entire pregnancy with one or no copays, I would have a very frank discussion and ask for an induction for Thursday or Friday at the very latest.

I was thinking this too. Me plain the situation to your doctor and beg him to induce you 2 days early. If he induces you on Friday and you have the baby on Friday or even Saturday, you'd most likely be going him on Sunday or Monday the latest so you'd be ok with the insurance piece.

Re: Change in insurance during hospital stay
My understanding is that once you are admitted, whatever your insurance is at the time will cover you for the entire stay even if your insurance terminates.

Change in insurance during hospital stay
Had DH speak to HR who called the insurance company. She claims it won't be an issue and not to worry. The deductible will transfer to the new insurance so I won't be hit with both deductibles. She also says that I don't need to worry about pre-auth since I will be admitted under the old insurance. I hope she's right.
I had an awful induction experience with DD1 and if I were to have a repeat of that, I still wouldn't be released from the hospital before the insurance changeover. So I'm just doing every old wives tale I can think of to get this kid moving lol.

Yes. This is correct. The carrier who covered you when you were admitted is responsible. At most, that carrier can contact the new one to work out some payment arrangement between them. If either company tries to drag you into it, contact the NYS Insurance Dept - they will not put up with that kind of nonsense

Induction scheduled for 5pm Friday so if things go smoothly, we should hopefully be discharged by 9/1.

Ask your Ob to strip your membranes- it hurts for a few seconds but is likely to get things moving.

I would call your insurance companies and ask. It sounds like something there should be a special exception for .

I would ask to get all of that information in writing. They can say something but all of a sudden you get crazy bills.
