We got dropped from DH's health insurance
DH started a new job this summer. We got our health insurance and dental insurance cards in the mail. DH's contribution has been taken out of his paycheck.
I just found out that the kids and I are no longer insured. We got dropped as of July 31. Apparently a third party company, not DH's company or insurance company, sent dependent verification forms that we did not return.
DH and I have no idea what these forms are. Not proud of it but we may have thought it was junk mail and tossed it, especially if it were a company we never heard of.
I am upset that no one even notified us that we were dropped. The only reason I found out is because I made a dentist appointment and the insurance company said my id was invalid.
Did this ever happen to anyone?
What should we do? Go on healthcare.gov and buy temporary insurance for 2015 until open enrollment in November for 1/1/16?

I would ask if you can appeal.

I would ask if you can appeal.
Would I appeal to the insurance company or would HR need to do that on our behalf?
I am so clueless about health insurance. First time ever having to deal with it.

I would press HR, this is their mistake honestly. They should have been clear about the fact that this paperwork was being sent out.
The good think is that it happened now, with likely only 3 months left in the year before the next open enrollment period. If they don't make the clear fix they should, you qualify to apply for the NYS exchange.

My husband's company also had this 3rd party verification. But we were warned it was going to happen and to look for the paperwork in the mail.
I would start with the HR department and see what they say. Good luck.

I just spent an hour on healthcare.gov. If it isn't resolved by the end of the week, we will buy a plan to bridge us until the end of the year.
I have never been without health insurance before. I was just telling DH that if we lost our car insurance, I would Uber it. I would not drive. I feel weird going out without health insurance.

Yeah, you should get something because at least you don't have to worry about 'pre-existing conditions' being brought up at your next insurance.

Same - DH got lots of notice that the 3rd party verification was coming.

What is with 3rd party forms? Why is a 3rd party even involved & more importantly why didn't HR inform you about these forms??
Can this be resolved retroactively?

DH and I are both upset with the situation.
We decided to just buy insurance for the next few months to bridge the time.
Ultimately we probably did get mailed this form and we did not fill it out and return it. DH was not notified by HR that this 3rd party company would be verifying dependents. He would obviously have filled it out if that were the case.
Open enrollment is in November so we will just wait until then.
I am just glad I discovered this now and not when we had an emergency.

Re: We got dropped from DH's health insurance
The NYC DOE had this 2 years ago. It was such a pain. I had to get a copy of our marriage certificate and get copies of our taxes and send them into this 3rd party verification place.
My husband was dropped from the insurance and I have been fighting for it for the last year. The insurance should kick in this Sept so I have been told.
BIG PITA for us!

It's so you can't have someone in HR or the insurance company wink/wink/nudge/nudge some false dependants thru onto the plan.

I just went through his with my company. We got emails weekly about it before and then the ones saying hey you have until X date to get it back in.
If it is a company of any size I am sure they sent out emails about it.

Multi billion dollar corporation with 30,000 employees. DH never received an email.
Maybe it is because he is new? I don't know. Sigh.
