catholic church question- registering
my husband and I moved a couple of towns over from our childhood neighborhood, and will probably move our parish to the one in our current town.
A friend of ours had a baby and said that she had to register herself at this new church before baptizing the baby. Is this true of all churches?
While I am Catholic, went to catholic school, etc, I haven't been to church since our wedding so I'm not sure how this "registering" thing works

Re: catholic church question- registering
I actually just did this yesterday for Dh and I. I went to the rectory and filled out a census form. That's all there is to it.

Re: catholic church question- registering
Yes, you need to register with a parish to get a baby baptized there. But as the PP said, it's just a matter of going to the rectory and filling out forms. (And then just let the old parish know you've switched, so they take you off their roster of parishoners and stop sending stuff).
I just switched again from the parish I baptized my DS at in Garden City to one close to where we live in N. Bellmore because DS is starting religion this year. I went and filled out the forms at the new parish (and had to meet with the parish coordinator for like 10 minutes for basically a welcome to the parish session) and I called the old one to let them know I registered at a new parish. Very easy.

Were you part of St. Anne's by any chance? Or were you St. Joe's? We are looking at St. Anne's right now

depends on the parish. it was my home town parish, and my family has been very active for decades there, so they didn't officially ask us to register, but they recommend it highly. It's really not a big deal, it's just basically going down and saying Hi we're new to the area and will be attending your church now instead of our old one.

Not a big deal. You just fill out a form at the rectory.

Re: catholic church question- registering
When you register it is so they can send you the weekly contribution envelopes. It is usually necessary to register and be a member for baptism or religion classes.

It depends on the parish. I baptized my kids without being a "member" of the parish. Honestly, they just want to send you contribution envelopes to keep track of how much money you're giving them.

You def do not need to register to get baptized at most Catholic Churches. They catholic church welcomes members because they are declining. They look at a baptism as a growing community. Weddings are a completely different story.

Re: catholic church question- registering
when I moved to PA I did call the local parish and register. I had to in order to get DS baptized. that basically means you are an official member and they send the weekly tithing envelopes to you.

St. Joe's. My DH grew up in Garden City, and that was his family's parish. We got married there, and baptized DS there.
