2 year old won't let me talk!

My 2 year old dd won't let my DH and I talk on the phone to other people because when they call, she throws a fit wanting to be the center of attention. The second we get off the phone, she's quiet and back to normal. This is driving me INSANE! Also, when DH and I want to have a conversation when he gets home from work, forget about it. She screams loudly on purpose to make sure we can't hear anything but her. I want to teach her manners and not allow this to continue bc it's driving us insane. Any ideas? Do we ignore her while she's screaming for our attention? We have been trying to say no and continue but we are quickly getting frustrated. Please help. TIA!

Yes ignoring the behavior and engaging her and praising her when she is quiet and talking at a normal level...

Or time out. My son will be two on 9/9 and I just got him a time out spot for the floor with a little timer.

You can end up using it a bit in the beginning and then hardly at all when they get the hang of it. You can look up online how to do the time out, specific details, and do it effectively. If you don't do it correctly it will be a mess. If you do as they say it is amazing.

Which mat and timer did you get? My DS turns 2 in Sept as well, and we need to start time outs!!!

Pretty sure this is normal. My dd still does it and will be 3 soon. She is getting better though. We tell her to hold her thought. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It's soooo annoying. Especially when I am trying to convey information about her to another person.

Yes, I do time-out and it works. I just wasnt sure it was ok to put her in time-out for this... Hmmmm maybe I should give that a shot.

my 2 year old does this too! it's the worst when I get home from work and I'm trying to have a quick conversation with my nanny about how the day went. I feel bad yelling at her because I know she's just happy that I'm home.

her new thing is that if I'm trying to talk to anyone, on the phone or in person, she yells "mama, my turn".

and when I'm holding my 10 month old son she says "mama, baby down, my turn" Chat Icon

ahhh the joys of having a 2 year old

Super Nanny recommended these style mats --

Used in conjunction with these style timers --- rule of thumb is a minute per year of age. 2 years = 2 minutes.

Re: 2 year old won't let me talk!

I also recommend, like I mentioned, reading online about the time out method and doing exactly what they say and consistently. If done right, it works great. If not, it can be a disaster. Now, the great thing about the mat is it's portable so it can go anywhere.

It's a round mat that goes on the floor in the corner, a boring one. So I put it out by the pantry in a boring corner and the timer that I got on the ledge. It suggested that you, when you have your child's attention, explain that the mat is for when he is a bad boy and needs a time out. So I did. I told him when I say time out bc you were a bad boy this is where we are going to come and you'll sit for two minutes. Fine. I have yet to have to put him in it and every time he walks by the mat he points and goes "bad boy!" LOL. So he already "gets" it.

She does have books but I get my info from watching reruns of her show on abc family --- you can also binge watch on demand!
