Route from Eastern Long Island to Montreal
Hi
Planning a trip to Montreal and trying to decide on a route as there will be two kiddies involved - 6 and 9 so will need to stop at least one night on the way.
As we are coming from out east we have the option to hop on all the ferries across to New london and make our way north from there.
So where would you stop en route to Montreal from New London to CT.
If you have gone the route of going up from NYC to Montreal where did you stop?
I like to have options to make my head spin more
Thanks
PS also I see there is a great wolf lodge somewhere near niagara - anyone ever stop there?
Thanks!!

Re: Route from Eastern Long Island to Montreal
It looks like taking 90 through MA and coming back into NY by Albany and then taking 87 is your best route but I do not live on LI and my best route is 84 to 87. Depending on time of year the Albany area or Saratoga might be good if you are stopping overnight- lots of hotel options. There is a nice Hilton in Saratoga with a great pool though if you go during racing season it's probably sold out. Or Lake George, there is a nice Comfort Inn which I think is open year round and has a great pool. From there I think it's about 3 hours to Montreal. We like to stop for lunch in Saratoga.

Looks like 91 to 87 would be your best route. When I made the trip ( leaving from Queens) we stopped just past Albany - but there were no kids
Also, Niagara is pretty far from Montreal (I think about 6-7 hours) so not sure if that would be someplace you would want to look to stop

Are you set on stopping somewhere over night? Depending on how far you are from the ferry, it's not too long of a trip - 7.5 hours. You can stop along the way to stretch, have lunch, etc. and then keep going.
Definitely wouldn't go to niagara since it's western NY.
Lake George would probably be your best bet if you want to stop overnight.

Re: Route from Eastern Long Island to Montreal
You want 91 north to 90 west to 87 north.
I would also try not to stop but if you feel you need to definitely Lake George.

Re: Route from Eastern Long Island to Montreal
We just went to Quebec with our 8 and 4 year old. We took 87 all the way and stopped overnight at a Holiday Inn in Plattsburgh. Very nice hotel.

Re: Route from Eastern Long Island to Montreal
I travel from NYC to Mont Tremblant (1.5 north of Montreal) a few times a year. I highly recommend trying to get to the border at an off hour. We've stayed in Plattsburg overnight and gotten to the border super early and got right through. If you stay further down south (say, Albany), I'd worry that you'd be stuck at the border awhile during the day.

Lake George would be your best best... From their, you dont have too much left to travel. Also, ive never waited too long at the border and ive been to Montreal lots of times (used to date someone there). Even during Formula 1, the max wait was like 3 hours- so dont worry about waiting at the border a long time.

Re: Route from Eastern Long Island to Montreal
Thanks Everyone - had not figured out a possible wait at the border - is that as painful as being stuck in the LIE in rush hour traffic? assuming you are basically sitting in your car with nowhere to go? I think 3 hours in the car sitting on line with my kids would be tough...so will definitely investigate the best time to cross the border.
Would anyone suggest doing a day at Mt. Tremblant - it looks gorgeous.
Thanks again.
