Road trip vent - Belt Parkway
I guess this is a combination warning/vent.
We just got back from Hershey.
We left Central Nassau after rush hour on Monday, which is the normal timing for us and we haven't had a problem in the past.
This time - OMG! There was construction in a few places but the worst was that the entrance to the upper level of the Verranzano was closed from the Belt. Traffic was backed up to before the drawbridge. We CRAWLED.
Coming back the other side (the same traffic we sat in on Monday) was just as bad if not worse.
We are going that way two more times and I guess I will try Manhattan or Harlem River Drive/GW....ugh.

Re: Road trip vent - Belt Parkway
When we went, we hit a RIDICULOUS amount of traffic on the Southern State in Nassau county because they were doing "moving roadwork" and had TWO, not ONE, but TWO lanes closed. For MILES. It backed us up for over 5 miles and added about an hour to our trip.
We were ok on the belt but good LORD was that bad
Closing 2 lanes, mid morning on a week day. Wonderful.

I would take the GW next time. That's what we usually take. While there is traffic, it's not nearly as bad as the belt and SI expressway. Or just cut through Manhattan, we do that during off peak times

Re: Road trip vent - Belt Parkway
Traffic on L.I. is out of control. Every time I take the Southern State there is an issue. It also seems that they never finish with construction projects, like they are milking the jobs. Sometimes I pass them and they are laughing and on a coffee break after I have sat in traffic for over an hour...Enough to make you want to do bad things...lol

Re: Road trip vent - Belt Parkway
WHAT is that? And why are they doing it during rush hour? Long Island has ENOUGH traffic issues.... why is this even allowed?

Lawn mowing, I swear to God! Today only one lane was an issue but still. Sometimes it's pot hole repairs. I have not made it to work on time in weeks!

This.
I also have had numerous people tell me when we leave for Disney in a few weeks, that we have to get on the road by 5am to avoid the traffic in the NY metro area in general.
Then DC.....
We've gotten stuck in those areas quite a few times.
I also have learned to never drink anything since there's no where to stop to pee when you are stuck for hours in NYA traffic like that.

This was us too. On a Thursday at 12:30pm it took us 5 1/2 hours to get to Dutch Wonderland! (that includes one 1/2 hour stop). DH was so annoyed before we even hit Nassau County he wanted to turn around and cancel our trip. They were cutting down trees on the Southern State and had 2 lanes closed, took about an hour for us to get to the Meadowbrook Pkwy. Don't even get me started on the Belt!!! After we got out of NY it was smooth sailing.

Honestly- with the way traffic already is on Long Island, shutting down 2 lanes should not be allowed except in the middle of the night. It's such horeshit

Every single time we go on a road trip it makes me want to move off of Long Island. It's like you're trapped on here and it takes ages to escape. I can only imagine if there were some major catastrophe that we'd never get out.

We were saying that this last trip. LI is a disaster. Utter disaster. It's WAY WAY WAY overpopulated and the roads can't handle it.
And they just keep building more and more.
