Wear your seatbelt....it will save you
So my MIL has a woman who has been claning her house for 20 years. the woman is in her 50's.
She is an EMT (or paramedic).
She drives a suburban. Big A$$ car.
The other day she got into a horrible car accident. She will be in intensive care , broken leg, face fractures, glass. Bad. Not Critical, but she really was harmed badly.
Both she and her BF were in the car, got sideswiped. Neither was wearing a seatbelt and both were BADLY hurt.
She said she never believed in seatbelts. The cops (and paramedics on scene) said if she was wearing her seatbelt she would not have been badly hurt. The reason she was hurt is that she bounced around the car.
Seatbelts save lives.

Agree, and I have started wearing seatbelts in the back seat as well after reading an article in the AAA magazine about deaths and injuries to back seat passengers.
How does an emt not believe in seatbelts?

SO glad she's ok, but she doesn't believe in seatbelts? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

I do too. And people always ask me why.
And you're right about the EMT! I didn't even catch that.

I always always wear my seat belt. No matter how far I'm going. Even if I'm going from one side of a parking lot to the other. I feel weird and like a rebel going up my driveway not wearing it.
Such an easy thing can make all the diff

I've always worn my seatbelt, even in the back seat. I have NO idea why anyone wouldn't put on a seatbelt while in a moving vehicle. Stupid.

I don't know.... She's not that much older than me, really... I'm 41. In my life, even if I'm driving literally down the street.... It is an automatic reflex to buckle up. I just don't feel right if I'm driving without a seatbelt on!!!

I always forget to wear mine in the back seat. I don't know why. Luckily I'm very rarely back there. Always always always in the front seat though.
It sounds like she was very lucky.

In my work as an attorney, the only deaths I have seen from auto accidents were where someone was ejected because they didn't wear their seatbelt. Always always wear it!

I just don't even feel right if it's not on! Always when driving of course, but even as a passenger in back... I have to have something on. I can't imagine why she doesn't believe in them And not for anything, but the dinging chime must be so annoying after awhile

Re: Wear your seatbelt....it will save you
I wear mine all the time, because it will save you in the vast majority of accidents. But not all. I was in a car accident with DH when we were teenagers. We were t-boned right at my door and it even flipped the car. If I had been wearing my seatbelt, the door would have pushed right through me. The car door was crushed in almost to the middle console. Because I didn't have my seat belt on, the impact pushed me away and it very possibly saved my life. We were both cut up from the glass breaking, but it would have been a lot worse if I was strapped/trapped in my seat. I know I'm probably in the minority with my experience, but maybe this was her train of thought?

Same thing happened with my friend. She lived because she didn't have a seatbelt on. If she was wearing it she would've been crushed. This is not to encourage people not to wear seat belts but it doesn't always save your life.

It also could have been a lot worse since the car flipped and you weren't tossed out.
You're very lucky!

Re: Wear your seatbelt....it will save you
It's literally second nature to me to put my seatbelt on as soon as I get in the seat of the car. I never even start the engine without putting it on. I cant understand people who don't wear them. Maybe it wont save you life, but maybe it will. Why take that chance?

I wear my seatbelt in any vehicle that has. One. Especially in cans in NYC.
My boss was In a cab going to the airport. No seatbelt, can was hit. She ended up ok but was in the hospital for a few days.
And yes. I had a cousin who was killed in a car accident and they were wearing their seatbelt. That was the kinds of accident no one would survive. So not ALWAYS. but you have a much better chance of surviving.
And the EMT. She has seen people die and horribly hurt from not wearing seatbelts. I don't get it. She thought she wa safe because she was driving a big car.
But I won't even move my car if seatbelts aren't on. Especially in the back.

Re: Wear your seatbelt....it will save you
I've driven an Excursion for 13+ years. I can't imagine thinking I was "safe enough" to not wear a seat belt. Family and friends hated me because I made them buckle up on the back. There are so many unnecessary passenger deaths & injuries because the passengers didn't have belts on.
In fact, I just sold my Excursion for a new vehicle because my old truck didn't have shoulder belts and head rests in all the rear seats. I loved the truck (I can't emphasize how much I loved and miss my truck), but passenger safety was much more important.
