If your first was a very difficult baby, were your other DC's the same?

DH and I are planning to TTC soon. DS was a very difficult baby - he was colic, had a milk protein allergy, didn't sleep well, didn't eat well, cried for hours on end, fussy all the time. He also ended up having ADHD when he got older. Sometimes I wonder if it was something I did during the pregnancy that made him that way. Drinking caffeine here and there or having that glass on wine once every few months. I'm slightly terrified of having another baby as difficult as he was.

My Brother and his wife just had their first child 2 weeks ago and she is an absolute angel. I mean literally the BEST baby. She's never fussy, great eater, great sleeper, only cries if she's hungry or wet.

So this got me thinking....if your first was a difficult baby, did your others have the same issues as well??

My first dd had awful colic screamed for hours on end and didn't sttn until she was almost a year old. My second dd was a awesome newborn. I use to wake up panicked because she didn't wake up constantly. She had no problems with formula or gas. My oldest was a very easy toddler and preschooler. My second is very difficult as a toddler and now preschooler. She fights me on everything, she is so stubborn and is always testing.

My ds1 was sooo easy. Never cried, no issues with formula, slept well early on. Honestly, he was amazing. Ds2 whines a lot, we had to switch his formula to gentalease. He doesn't sleep as well - my mom describes it has napping not sleeping. So just because your first was difficult does not mean your 2nd will be
Each kid is different.

my 1st was very difficult. Colicy, milk protein allergy, needed to be rocked to sleep, etc

2nd child was complete opposite.

My first was difficult - he had digestion issues and was a horrible sleeper.

My second was great - he was a great sleeper and eater from the get go.

I don't think I did anything different between the two pregnancies - except sleep less the second time around.

My first was a colic beast! He was a super tough baby and is still a demanding child at 8.5. He is also ADD Inattentive. My younger DS was an amazing baby. Always smiling, always happy. Now as he's getting older, 5.5, he is more challenging, but he was a great baby.

Re: If your first was a very difficult baby, were your other DC's the same?

My mom had my sister, who was an angel.

My mom then had Kenneth who really wasn't "bad" but didn't sleep AS well as Jenn and was fussy sometimes because turns out he was *ALWAYS* hungry and it was just never enough.

Anyway, then she had me and she was a little nervous because Kenneth was harder than my sister. But me, I ended up being the best out of all three of us -- slept 10+ hours a night from the moment I was born. My mom said she remembers taking me home from the hospital, I was like TWO days old, and she put me down for the night to sleep say like 8pm and I slept until like 7:30am the following morning -- and she was so tired that she fell asleep and when she woke up at around 6:30am and realized I had not gotten up she was TERRIFIED I had like, DIED or something. She said she will never forget how petrified she was walking into my nursery to see me in the crib and then there I was, just snoozing away and she was like OMG this baby is an angel Chat Icon

I was always like that. So, yeah you never know - My cousin's first son was HORRIBLE, never napped, never slept. Refused to eat. Would throw tantrums when he was older over everything. Then they had a daughter who is PERFECT. It's amazing how that happens.

You might thing I'm nuts but The Happiest Baby On The Block was the best DVD I ever bought and I used the methods in that from day one and it made a huge difference, in my opinion, because my son is such a great baby - I'm super lucky.

No, thank god lol

My first born (DS) was horrible as a baby. Colicky, wouldn't nap, didn't sleep through the night until 10+ months old, picky eater, hated bottles, etc.

Sometimes I wonder why we decided to do it all over again! But, our DD was a different baby from day one. Much more laid back. She napped good, slept good, ate good. I think we were rewarded for having to go through hell with the first one!

I'm wondering the opposite. DD1 has been a super easy kid most of the time. I'm 8 weeks away from my due date with DD2 and I'm hoping she'll be just like her sister or am I doomed to have a difficult child bc DD1 was so easy.

My sister's first DS was a difficult baby and her second DD is very easy going. I think it just depends on the baby.

Re: If your first was a very difficult baby, were your other DC's the same?

so far, no, thank God.

My older ds has made me stressed out & exhausted since the day he was born. He's very high strung, anxious, moody... never relaxed, never happy. Everything is a problem, he cries, whines, tantrums, always upset, he fights everything & is super demanding all day long. I don't even like taking him out in public or being around other people because he is so embarrassing & doesn't know how to act. He still is this way at almost 2. As an infant, he would scream all day & night.

My younger ds has been wonderful so far. He is a calming influence on me. He is laid back, happy, sleeps great, just overall makes everything pleasant & very easygoing. I'm able to enjoy him so much more. When I hold him & play with him, I feel relaxed instead of on edge. What a difference. I hope he stays this way.

Oh my god just reading these responses is making me feel better knowing that so many of you had different experiences with each baby. I was getting worried that we were doomed to have all cranky, colicky babies Chat Icon

In my parents case, the first baby (me, lol) was a breeze compared to my sister (colicky).

So this is probably what will happen to me.

Re: If your first was a very difficult baby, were your other DC's the same?

My First DS was very tough to age of a year. He was extremely alert from day 1, hated the car seat, didn't nap, colicky and had dairy intolerance till the age of 2.5. He was much much easier from 1-3 years of age though.

So far my second DD is also not that easy but is easier then her brother as a newborn. She also hates the car seat but does actually nap during the day. Doesn't sleep as well as he did at night. She has both dairy and likely soy intolerance (yay for restrictive diets). I have heard a lot of opposite experiences and so far for us I wouldn't go that far but she does seem to be a bit easier then her brother was.
So you never know but I would try to be prepared for all possibilities.

My first was "colicky"-- or whatever you want to call it (cried all the time), milk protein, reflux, poor sleeper, difficult type temperament/slow to warm up. My 2nd baby is much more typical or easygoing. Better sleeper, no reflux, etc. Very different.

DS1 was a difficult baby, but easy after he turned 1. DS2 was an easy baby, but turned into a handful after his first birthday.

Re: If your first was a very difficult baby, were your other DC's the same?

Mine was the opposite...Kids just are who they are and you did nothing to make them that way...

My first DS was a dream, STTN the first night home (6 hours straight) ate everything, slept well, was easy to put down, was always smiling, didnt have his first tantrum until 3yo, he is 7 and is a teachers dream (as his teachers say) gets good grades,

My second DS who is 3years younger is the totall opposite. He pretty much came out of the womb throwing tantrums, he didnt sleep well for the first 7 months, wasnt a good eater until 4yo, threw some tantrums that I am still recovering from...

They are just very different kids.

Re: If your first was a very difficult baby, were your other DC's the same?

1st Chat Icon was a tough baby (silent reflux) although it wasn't his fault. my inlaws watched him and didn't believe a baby should nap. He didn't sleep for 15 months, cried in the car for over a year (yes every time), cried for baths for a year, being changed, etc etc. DREAM toddler. so easy.

2nd Chat Icon terrible baby for first 3 months (although slept from 8 weeks on for 11 hours straight). Had severe reflux and would cry for 4 hours every night. After 3 months and on the right formula/meds... such an easy baby.

3rd Chat Icon SO easy!!! silent reflux but very mild and on Axid. Sleeps. So happy. Easy. Piece of cake.

Thank you for posting. Thinking about trying for a 2nd, but DD is quite the ball breaker for lack of a better term and I can't imagine going through another one like her. Chat Icon

Re: If your first was a very difficult baby, were your other DC's the same?

DD was a very difficult baby. She cried all day for like 8 months. Only let myself, my husband and my mom hold her for almost a year. Would refuse eating and just cry and cry. It was rough. On a side note, I was the skinniest of my life from walking and rocking that child all day! :) I wanted to stop after having her cause it was rough, but decided to go for #2 anyway.

DS was also a difficult baby, but not as bad as DD. He cried a lot at night, but was happier during the day. I pretty much nursed him constantly at night to keep him from crying. He was pretty happy though after 3-4 months old, but he didn't sleep for more than 45min-1hour intervals until about 9 months of age. I actually slept on the floor in his room from 4 months to 9 months cause walking in and out of his room was too exhausting.

That being said. I would do it all again in a heartbeat with my two little ones (but no way in hell am I having a third!)! It is worth it once you get past that initial phase.

Every baby is different- my bil's first was so bad that he and his wife could not put the baby down. Their second gives them no trouble. My sisters first two were fine and her third had colic.
