What do you do with ?

People who keep at something when you've asked them numerous times not to talk about a subject. I know I can't talk to someone who is homophobic, anti-marriage equality, and anti-same sex parents. I've asked numerous times to please not start the gay bashing in front of me. I said it FIVE times in a matter of 1 minute just now, and they kept on going. I had to stand up and raise my voice and numerous times say stop talking stop talking stop talking. She then says "they should all go live on an island alone". I was so close to throwing her out of the office and making her go home, and I'm sure I would have been well within my rights. But I sat back down and turned around. She said "I don't see why I'm not saying anything against you." BUT YOU ARE! I am HIGHLY offended by that talk, I find it repulsive and you are cutting me to the bone. "So you would be oK if DS marries a man?" YES, I want my son to be happy, I don't care if that means he's gay, straight, trans, bi, whatever. I want him to be HAPPY and he deserves all the same rights that I have. I don't know how else I should have handled it, I think I handled it as calmly as possible considering how in my face she got. I don't understand why when someone asks to please stop talking about a subject and they say because it is a touchy, hot button topic for them, why you can't just shut the fluck up? I don't understand!

Anyway, rant over. Go SCOTUS!

Here's a trick. EVERY time this person talks, burp really loudly. EVERY time. YOu'll probably need some canned soda to get a really good one going, but it will be worth it.

I would ask the person to leave for 10 minutes and come back when they can compose themselves.

I understand not everyone agrees with me, which is why I said I can't talk about the subject with her (I've asked this on multiple previous occasions as well). I'm going to go the gas route next time, just burp in her face.

My parents are republican, my dad watches fox news 24/7. My mom is less conservative on a lot of subjects. I do lean republican on certain things but mostly liberal, especially for things like gay rights.

I live in my parents house so its hard not to be around it...

I never engage my dad in talking about politics, other people do tho... i just get up and walk away.

I actually had to get up and walk away from my grandma talking about the gay marriage in Ireland. She never even lived in Ireland. Her parents came here when before she was born so i dont understand why it matters to her.

I know someone (with whom I am quite close) who is a hardcore atheist, and this person often just randomly brings up my faith with no provocation on my part. I am very spiritual and do believe in God, spirits, energy, etc. This person has even said that s/he cannot believe that someone as intelligent as I am could possibly believe in God. (I'm not trying to toot my own intelligence horn; I'm just reiterating what exactly was said.)

Obviously, bashing my beliefs isn't nice, but I just tune this person out on this topic.

I look at it in this way: I'm not in control of what other people say. I am, however, in control of what I choose to internalize and what I choose to pay attention to.

I honestly don't know what I would do. I'd want to smack them but that's not going to be good for you.

you work in a doctor's office right? what if a patient hears her speaking like that? it is extremely unprofessional and offensive to a lot of people! I would tell your boss.

not only is it annoying and offensive, but its bad for business to have people like that around.

Either get up and walk away or just don't engage her at all. She's prob trying to get a rise out of you and you're giving it to her.

On second thought, I feel like you should give her a big kiss on the mouth. I think that will also shut her up.
