Early riser

If it's not one sleep issue, it's another.

DS has been an inconsistent sleeper since birth. For the last two months, he's been more or less sttn. For most of those 2 months, he's been waking up at 5:45 - early, but bearable. The last few days, he's been up at 5:10-5:15. I don't want to keep encouraging this earlier time. I've tried an earlier/later bedtime with no success.

At this point, he sleeps 10 hours overnight and naps maybe 2 hours a day. He's 14 months old so he doesn't really understand much.

Any advice?

Do you go right in when he wakes? I would suggest just letting him relax in his crib for a bit before going in. Maybe the lack of immediate attention would encourage him to go back to sleep.

Try putting him down either earlier or later.
Try leaving him in the morning. He may go back to sleep.

Remind yourself that this is a phase and will hopefully pass.

Re: Early riser

How long did you try the earlier/later bedtime? DS is 2.5 and has never really slept more than 10 hours overnight. So, he has a later bedtime to make up for that. I don't want him up at 5am! But, it takes a few weeks of consistency before you see any change. Also, do you have blackout shades in his room? The sunlight won't help you get him to sleep later.

Re: Early riser

Blackout shades are a must! When my kids used to wake at those hours I would go in & tell them it's too early & go back to bed & then I'd walk out of their room. They went back to sleep most of the time.

My 12 months old is waking up exactly the same time. Been doing it for past 2 months. Problem is my dog goes into his room And my husband gets him out of the crib. Now he's used to getting up and eating right away. I'm off for the summer so I hope to squash some of that behavior.

I tried 30 mins earlier and later (between 7 and 8 - normal bedtime is 7:30), but only for maybe 4 days at a time. I have blackout curtains and shades. In his room, it's always night time! I let him cry for 10-15 minutes when he wakes up Going in and telling him to go back to sleep does not work - I don't think he's at a point where he understands something like that.

Now that the school year is done, I'll be able to hopefully have some success switching up bedtime.

I agree, granted DS is only 8 months but he went through a phase of waking up at 5, so I "trained" him lol. He did this for a week and I kept waking up with him changing his diaper then putting a small toy in the crib with him and leave the room and go back to sleep. He played a little bit then fell asleep. He still randomly wakes at 5 but he just plays with his toy and goes back down.

Re: Early riser

both my kids did/do this. DD#1 was like that until about 18 months - in phases anyway. It seems that when there's a growth spurt or a new tooth she started waking up early. I tried putting her to be later, and she actually would wake up earlier - i know that sounds odd, but its true. in fact, she still does that if she goes to bed much base her normal bedtime. Sometimes getting to bed earlier would help. Once she turned 4 she really started sleeping late (like 7ish), but then we had the baby and now DD#2 wakes her up! :(

DD#2 is only 1, but i noticed the same thing - she wakes early when she's having a growth spurt or teething. usually passes after a few weeks.

I would much rather them get up early and sleep through night. it would be nice if they did both, but with my kids...beggars cant be choosers lol

hang in...it will get better
