South side FF and pacifier?

Do they treat you like a leppar here if you choose to FF?

Also do they have pacifiers or should I bring one?

Re: South side FF and pacifier?

Nope. I supplemented with my second and kept him in the nursery overnight (the horror!) and they never tried to push lactation consultants on me. They were great and very accommodating.

And when I was there, they gave the babies the Soothie pacifiers.

Re: South side FF and pacifier?

It's been 5 years but no way.
They were AMAZING.

I heard the words Breast and feeding ONCE

In L&D they asked if I was breastfeeding.
I said NO! (very loudly!)
They marked the chart and never again was I asked

They brought me Enfamil like it was water.

I took a ton home.

Nobody said word one to me

I got a bunch of pacifers too.

And every night I called them, like the night nurse ,and told them to take her to the nursery so I could sleep.

But again- this was 5 years ago

Re: South side FF and pacifier?

Ok great!! Thanks!!! Good Sam was good about it too. Once a nurse came in asking if my room mate and I needed help and we were like "nope ff" and that was it. Although when the nursery didn't feed Dd for 6 hrs while I was with my other DD in nicu I complained and one nurse asked if I was BF and if I wasn't bc I thought it would be too hard with twins. I yelled at her that I wasn't bc I didn't want to!

This is how St. Charles was 11 weeks ago. They asked me once and that's it. Took her back to the nursery at night and gave me a shitload of Similac to take home. No pacifier though. I brought my own. I heard how they were becoming more strict since I had DD1 4 years ago, so I was super nervous. But it wasn't what I was expecting at all. I was happy with my stay this time around as well.

But again- this was 5 years ago

South side FF and pacifier?

I loved Southside but I did feel pressure to breast feed even when DD was failing to thrive. They have a full time LC now and I think that's putting more pressure on moms. My moms friend is a nurse on the postpartum floor there (but was off when I was there) and told my mom that they do tell them to push BF now. That said, I went in planning to BF. if you go in planning to FF you may have a different experience. I didn't mind the help trying, but I am slightly angry that when my daughters lips were dried out and she was more jaundice, and losing a dangerous amount of weight, they didn't talk to me about supplementing at all and when the pediatrician mentioned we'd have to try supplementing by the next day if she lost any more weight, the LC told me I didn't want to do that and continued to push BF.

They did take DD to the nursery at night and brought her back when she was hungry. They had no problem with this.

And they have pacifiers. In fact even though the hospital says not to give them to BF infants, my pediatrician gave DD one on the last morning so I'd have it to take home, because she disagrees with that idea and says it's actually beneficial.

What I don't get about that is, if a DOCTOR is telling you to supplement but your baby is dehydrated, losing weight, jaundiced and STARVING, where does an LC get off telling you not to?
They aren't doctors. They don't have a medical degree.
How dare they go against the advice of a medical doctor?
I would have thrown them out of my room and threatened a law suit.
That is insanity.
I'm sorry but this whole breastfeeding push has gone just a bit too far. Let a kid starve to death before giving -GASP- that POISON formula.
Yeah ok

I agree!!

The brainwashing that is pushed down mother's throats in hospitals about BFing is too much!

I experienced it with DS 4.5 years ago - they made me feel so small and uninformed about not choosing to BF him. It was horrible and after being in labor and having all these new emotions in play, that was the last thing I was expecting to feel.

When I had DD a year and a half ago, I made sure they knew where I stood about BFing and shut anyone down who proceeded to make me feel like I was doing a disservice to my DD by FFing. I told them my choice and told them their opinions were not needed.

I had a great experience at Southside both times I delivered, in 2012 and this past Dec. I never felt pressure to BF. I was asked once each time, and that was it. For my most recent delivery, the L&D nurse said "I'm supposed to ask for a reason why you don't want to BF, so how about I enter "bc this is America and we can do whatever the f we want" lol. I was given handfuls of pacifiers to take home each time, and sent my babies to the nursery, no questions asked, overnight both times.

That is awesome! Love that nurse!
They didn't ask me for a reason when I said no 5 years ago but I WISH they would have.
MAN would they have gotten an earful.
I would have ENJOYED it actually!

Exactly!! My one DD was in the nicu and couldn't eat enough at one feeding to thrive. They had to put her on neosure. One nicu nurse said its a good thing I wasn't BF bc it would have been that much harder. They need to step back and let moms make the decisions. I was FF and I'm still alive almost 3 kids later. Lol
