How did they learn? Private lessons, group lessons, from you?

My parents offered to get dd lessons but I feel like we should be able to teach her ourselves. I guess weekly lessons would help since otherwise I probably won't get her in the pool as consistently.

Ymca she was swimming on her own after 1 session. We did safety swim for over a year and she was learning but not swimming on her own because they hold onto them in the pool. I skipped safety swim for my second dd and went right to ymca. They must be 3 to do lessons without you in the water at ymca.

Safety swim makes you double diaper even a potty trained child until age 4 which I really hated.

My son is 4.5 and can swim, but he's always wearing some sort of flotation for safety anyway. He's been going to lessons at the Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park for about a year and a half. It's a group setting, about 8 kids at a time.

We taught him. He's 4.

We went on vacations with pools where he can't touch bottom. We used old school arm swimmies on him. Been wearing swimmies since 2.

This past vacation, I took off one, then the second & he swam to me & then across the pool.

lessons, she did 2 private then group lessons. I did lessons b/c I want her to be a strong swimmer and learn the right way. I grew up with a pool and learned at home but I'm not a strong swimmer and not the correct way, then I also don't have to go in the pool all winter long. I feel like the only way is to have consistency. A month or 2 over the summer is not enough IMO

Re: If your 3 or 4yo can swim

My older ds we taught ourselves. He just loved the water and hated being held. He was in swimmies before he was even 1. As he got older we would put less and less air in his swimmies. He was swimming on his own by 3. My younger ds is 5 and is just starting to swim on his own unassisted. He's just way more nervous and way less confidant in the water.
