Fire Island w/ 1 year old

My family is going to Fire Island for 3 days. I was hoping to join them with my DH and 1 year old DD for a day trip b/c I don't want to stay there over night. Is it impossible to get all the gear I need and a 1 year old on/off the Ferry and to the beach etc.. I have never been to Fire Island on our own (with DH) let alone with a child. Thoughts?

What would you need? I would go, with my stroller and use my stroller as storage with the mommy hooks and everything. maybe instead of bringing the regular diaper bag I would bring a beach bag, put the towels, blankets, diapers, etc in there, if you're bringing a cooler, bring a smaller one and that could go right in the undercarriage of the stroller (I'm picturing this with my stroller obviously, lol). I can see it as maybe a little tough maneuvering when you are packing everything up, but I think it's definitely doable... I guess it really depends on what stroller you have. There are always people working on the ferry there to help you (they were very helpful when my 6 month preggo a$$ had 3 bags for 3 days last year).

Thanks for trying to help me. At least the way you described it, it doesn't seem impossible. When we get off the Ferry are hotels and beach like right there or are we walking miles? LOL I have no idea what to expect! LOL

Depending on where you are going there may be a bit of a walk but typically no more than 5 or 10 minutes. I would just load everything on the stroller and maybe a big tote or backpack. A lot of the houses have things like beach chairs and umbrellas, even toys that you can use. Once your parents are there you can see what is there and decide what you need. I've taken DD on the ferry alone plenty of times for both day and overnight trips and I just pack the minimum and it's fine.

I would treat it just like going to any beach. If you and DH are both going, I would think, it would be easy to bring your DD. DH and I just went to the DE beaches with our 13 month old DS and it was easy.

We just put all of his stuff (diaper, wipes, change of clothes) in our beach bag. We didn't bring any toys with us - DS was pretty content just walking/crawling around on the sand. We had a beach blanket and towels and a soft cooler. We also had a little tent for him. Our friends brought a nice tent that blocked the wind and sun very well. It was pretty compact.

What town are you going to? Most are about 20 minutes.

I think it's about 20ish minutes, maybe 30? get there early so you can get a seat. It's not a far walk at all from the ferry to the opposite side of the island and the beaches, maybe 10 minutes? It sounds like a great day!
