Re: Lake George: Bolton landing or Diamond point
It depends....how close to the village do you want to be? What kinds of things do you want to do? Do you plan on staying in a hotel, cabin, or rented house?
Diamond Point and Bolton are both outside of LG Village and you will need to drive in to town. Bolton is easily 10 - 15 minutes away. If you plan on staying at a hotel, you need to stay either in LG or in Queensbury. Bolton and Diamond Point are more cabins, houses, or motels on the lake with little cottages. In Diamond Point you'll find the Lodges at Cresthaven which are very nice and in Bolton is the Sagamore. Other than those 2 DP and Bolton are more mom and pop smaller motels/cottages.
Bolton has it's own little downtown village area with some restaurants and cute shops. Much more antique-y and artsy than LG. Also much smaller and less commercialized/touristy.
Diamond Point doesn't have a village or downtown so you will have to travel into LG village or Bolton if you want to eat or shop.

Re: Lake George: Bolton landing or Diamond point
We stayed in Bolton Landing at Lake George and really enjoyed the little town. It is a little more remote and, like pp mentioned, about a 15 minute drive to the lake.
We specifically chose to stay in Bolton's Landing because we wanted to go to Adirondack Extreme... an adventure course.
Link.
ETA: We rented a house.

Re: Lake George: Bolton landing or Diamond point
we stayed last year and will again this year at Melody Manor in Bolton Landing.
we loved that it wasn't so motel'y like say surfside in the village. (which we have stayed it without kids) While yes it is set up like a motel we really liked the set up. It has lots of open space, big lawn overlooking lake. Walk down to lake and kids can swim, take out paddle boats, kyacks etc. My kids loved it! There is a restaurant on site and a pool as well as lake access.
There are cute shops, restaurants (kids loved Bolton Beans which is a diner in an old train car), a ben and Jerrys, all in Bolton. It took us about 10 mins to get to the village of lake George where the action is.
If you want to walk to everything, the village is a good option. If you don't mind driving, we really like Bolton landing.

We stay at the Cresthaven - the boys LOVE the 'log cabins' -
it's between the town of LG and Bolton Landing - it's a bit of a pain b/c you HAVE to drive everywhere you go - but, I like that it isn't mobbed 24/7. and the drive isn't far at all - 10 minutes tops

There are some great places on the lake. For Bolton/Diamond Point I would suggest Depe Dene's, Cresthaven Lodges, Stepping Stones, The Boulders, Twin Birches, Canoe Island Lodge, or Melody Manor. All are right on the lake but require a 10 - 15 minute drive to the VILLAGE of Lake George.
If you want to be in Lake George Village and on the lake, I suggest the Sundowner, The Georgian, or Surfside.

Lake George: Bolton landing or Diamond point
We have stayed at the Flamingo several times and are going back next month. It's in Diamond Point and so not in LG proper which we don't mind. It's not fancy but I find it clean and comfortable and we get a unit with 2 bedrooms and a living area and kitchen. Some days we hang out at the resort all day, the beach area is great as are the pools. There is a brand new Price Chopper not too far which is a great place for groceries.
Bolton is cute and quaint but parking in the village is a nightmare.

Re: Lake George: Bolton landing or Diamond point
If you are staying in the village, I would recommend Marine Village Resort. I've stayed at the Georgian and Surfside and found both to be run down and dirty. We wouldn't swim in the pool at Surfside because it was so cloudy and gross and their beach is so shallow. The Georgian was really run down in my opinion. Marine Village is clean and well kept and their lakefront is really nice!
