DD was in the hospital
On Saturday DD (21 months )had a birthday party to go to and my friends DD (5 yrs old) was hugging her and somehow they both fell. Friends DD fell onto my DD and from where I was standing couldn't see if my DD banged her head. Wasn't anything terrible, DD cried but was fine the rest of the day. The next day DD woke up and was warm to touch, didn't eat much breakfast which wasn't her usual. She took a very early nap and then woke up throwing up all over the place...An hour later she threw up again all over. I told DH what happened the day before and he said lets just call and tell the ped. just in case. After discussing with our ped. we decided just to be safe lets take her to the hospital even though we all felt it had nothing to do with a head injury and was probably a virus. We went to LIJ Cohens and while we were in the waiting room there was another couple with a little girl there. We get called into the emergency room where she was going to be evaluated after having gone through registration. We are in our little private room and a doctor comes in and proceeds to talk about DD's fall and then starts asking me questions about her vaginal area and her vaginal laceration and the fall she had. I asked him if he had the right child and then he asks is your DD's name "XXX" and I say No! Now DH is fuming bc this is a HIPPA Violation and we now know what that other child's name is and what she has. 3 other Doctors and RN's come into our room after that still confusing my DD for this child! To the point where they were going to send a urologist into see my DD. At this point I was fuming and demanded they get our file right as well as billing!
I just want to let everyone know that apparently LIJ Cohen ER might be having some issues bc even when I called my ped they had referred us to Winthrop and said that they haven't liked the ER at LIJ Cohen recently, but bc we were already almost at the hospital we went anyway.
DD had to be admitted in bc her blood levels (CO2, dehydration, etc...) were very low and we needed her to have a night being on fluids. Once we were admitted the floor we were on was fine as well as the doctors and RN's. However, even the nurses were upset with the way they put her IV in. I just wanted you guys to know my experience with the ER there.

How horrible, I would be fuming and probably report it to the hospital director.

Yes, we felt bad that we were told that private information and know that family would probably be upset. They just seemed very sloppy which is a shame.

Wow, that's not cool. Hope they get their act together bc it really is a great emergency room normally.

I would contact the patient advocate at the hospital and tell them what you wrote here. The er staff violated several laws and did not follow procedures. I hope your dd feels better.

Wow, not cool at all. I am going to talk to my very good friend who is a PICU (pediatric intensive care unit) nurse / assistant nurse manager there and find out what's going on because that is horrifying. We had such an amazing experience with Cohens NICU, the nurses are amazing as are the doctors. Sucks that the ER is having such issues.

Is it really a HIPPA violation if it is a pure human error? I don't think I would be so mad. Unfortunately the other child's situation was something serious. What if they walked in and asked about her ear infection and then were like oops, wrong kid? You probably wouldn't have batted an eye. I would be mad though if it got to the point where your DD was actually SEEN by a urologist. Also I would triple check that your DD's medical record does not say anything about a vaginal laceration, for obvious reasons.

The doctor/nurse/assistant should be walking in, checking the bracelet, and then proceeding. That's how it is done in EVERY OTHER LIJ ER, and Cohens is LIJ. I can't imagine what happened that day.

DD had her bracelet on so I don't understand why they didn't check. I just find it interesting that my peds office is now sending patients to Winthrop bc of "issues"

Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience! My son (17 months at the time) was admitted through Cohens ER back in January. They were awesome. He had a relatively rare bacterial infection and was there for a week. I would recommend it o anyone. I wonder if it was just a really bad day. It's a teaching hospital so we came across an variety of levels of doctors (med students, residents, attending etc...)

I'm so sorry you had this experience. I would absolutely file a complaint!
We rushed my 3.5wk old to Cohens last month because he had stopped breathing. They came rushing out into the lobby to help us. And they were so excellent in his care. He was in PICU and we stayed 8 days (he ended up having Pertussis) and I can't thank them enough for the care they gave my son and even my husband and I.
It makes me sad they could have made such a big mistake/violation !

While I realize given the subject matter it's sensitive, I would cut them some slack. Busy ER, 2 little girls, both fell with "minor trauma" (from a hospital standpoint not parent standpoint). Cohen's is a big busy place. You have top notch specialists (probably some of the best in Nassau county). However, you probably also have a string of fellows, residents, students running around as well. (why 3 different doctors walked in). For the record, I don't work there or anything, I just know the environment.
I'm not saying you don't have a right to be upset, or that you shouldn't complain. I'm just saying that I can see this type of thing happening in a busy ER setting. Did they apologize?
As far as the floor nurse complaining about the ED's IV, that's not professional.

What mad me pissed was that this didn't happen just 1 time, it was about 3 different times by 3 different people. I always loved Cohen's, I was there as a child too. It doesn't matter how busy they are or the fact there were students, etc., HIPAA violations are serious and can cause a major headache for the hospital if they are reported. And "it was just a mistake" is no defense. Whether it was a mistake or not, the consequences can be pretty severe. I understand why you didn't report it and not saying you should, but it sounds like they really screwed up with your daughter. I hope she is feeling better.

And HIPPA violation aside, I would be more concerned that if they don't know who they are talking to or treating, they could easily give the wrong medication, administer the wrong test etc.
I could give a rat's asss if a stranger knows what kind of injury my daughter has or is in the ER for , but I'd be more concerned that they are mixing up patients.
That is SCARY and very dangerous.
