Would you cancel your credit cards in this situation?
I unknowingly left my bag with wallet inside at a store and 5 mins after returning home (20 mins after not having the bag in sight) the store called and said a customer returned it.
Hubby thinks I should cancel my credit cards in case the customer who returned it wrote down the card #s and decides to use it.
I'm against this as I have alot of auto debits and alot of credit history tied to my credit cards.
What would you do?
TIA.

If you tell the credit card company that your credit card number may have been stolen, they will just reissue you a new number. It shouldn't affect your credit history with them.
As for the auto debits, it is annoying to change them. I would call and change the numbers to be on the safe side, but I doubt someone would return your wallet intact but steal numbers. Sounds like the person tried to do the right thing.

I would think that if the person was going to steal your numbers, they would just steal the whole bag. Why bother writing down the numbers and then returning it to the person, unless you seriously just want to fck with them?
I would just pay close attention to all transactions. I do that anyway, so it wouldn't be any extra effort.

I agree with this. They would have taken it with them and left the store and dumped the bag.
Just keep an eye in transactions.

This. As long as you're sure that everything is still in your wallet, then you probably got lucky that a nice person found your purse and turned it in. Maybe I'm too trusting, but that's how I would feel about it.

Why would you cancel the cards? And not just call your cc's and let them know the situation, they can either monitor charges OR just issue you a new card. Which does not affect your credit at all.
Or get Identity Guard which again watches your cc's and lets you know of any fraudulent activity along with if anyone tries to open an account it automatically notifies you. It also notifies you if someone tries to charge a large amount.

Thanks all. I won't cancel the cards then but just monitor them. It just seems like alot of trouble and I am optimistic that the good Samaritan who returned my bag won't do something like that. Hubby just wanted to be cautious 'cus I've been a victim of ID theft before...

You may want to call the 3 agencies and put a freeze on your credit. This way someone can't open up new accounts using your info. If your license etc were in wallet I'd be more afraid of this. If they wanted to use existing cards, they would have stole them.
I lost my bag on Black Friday for about 20 mins before I realized and went back for it. Loaded with cash. Purchased gift cards and credit cards. Was returned and nothing stolen. I had prolly 1k in there since I was out shopping and it was for gifts. There are good people in this world!

No and I wouldn't do anything. You are not responsible for fraudulent charges anyways. I would just keep an eye on things to make sure there is nothing suspect. There probably won't be anything.

I would just keep an eye on the transactions. Usually banks are pretty good with detecting fraud and will let you know, and even then you're not responsible.
