Climbing out of crib

DS is 13 mos and hasn't climbed out yet. In fact, I dont' think he'll attempt to for quite a bit which is the only reason I keep him in a crib for now. But I got to thinking the other day, what if he did? His room is not carpeted and if he were to fall he'd find himself pretty hurt. What do you all do to ensure a safe landing if/when it happens? Hoping I get him into a bed before we have to worry about this (no way he'll go in one now) but you never know how these things will play out....

Re: Climbing out of crib

Is the mattress at the lowest setting? Maybe try putting an area rug there so in case he falls there is some sort of padding. My DS started to climb out after he turned 2. We tried to buy a few more months by turning the crib the opposite way (so that the tall part was facing outside and short part was facing the wall) but eventually we were forced to move him (I want to say maybe a month or two before he turned 2.5) Some nights my bedroom door would open and my DS would run in! Thankfully he landed on his feet but he knew just how to swing his leg over the crib and get out! We moved him directly to a full size bed and put up bed rails so he wouldn't fall out.

Climbing out of crib

My DD jumped out of her crib onto hard wood floors with just a very thin area rug.. she did not get hurt. I didn't hesitate to switch her crib to a toddler bed after she did it, but I just wanted to reassure you that more than likely, your DS will NOT get hurt jumping out of the crib. Maybe scared, but unlikely to be really hurt.

My DS jumped out and never thought anything of it - he did it every day for a week until I switched his crib over to a toddler bed (I was waiting for the guard rail to arrive before I made the switch). It didn't even slow him down. They're more resilient than we are!

Re: Climbing out of crib

My one DD climbed out without getting hurt once but never did it again. The other one climbed out and fell and was just startled. Another time she flipped right over onto her head while I was sitting there reading a bedtime story. They haven't climbed out or attempted to in awhile. We have wood floors and no rug.
