Sign me up!! Where do you work???

I work at an ad agency - it's actually fairly common to have at most agencies!

So I have to ask, since I am fascinated by this.
Can you just go up to the bar mid day and grab a drink and go back to your desk and work with a vodka tonic?

At my job the bar serves alcohol after a certain time. Not sure if it's 5pm or a little before that. During the day our bar is a cafe that serves coffee, food, etc.

In that case, I'd come in to work at 3PM and stay until 10. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well, it's sort of on the honor system that most people don't abuse. If you want, you could drink at your desk during the day, but it's not really something that is looked favorably upon.
Drinking is generally reserved for later in the day, and always with the assumption that you don't have any real work to be done!
We have often had 4:00 wine/cheese parties in our dept, or we have beer/wine with bday cake's, or its ok to have a few drinks with lunch if you want (Again, you don't do it if you have to go back and really work, its an unspoken but very understood rule).
The bar is self policed and most people don't go there until the afternoon. We don't have anyone really manning it, its just there.

I've worked at other agencies that have the bar locked til 5pm, or places that just have constantly stocked fridges of beer (helps to have liquor/beer clients too) for anyone to have anytime.

The thinking is .. you work hard, you are allowed to blow off steam, relax etc when you want.

The second someone abuses it, we all get reprimanded though! Chat Icon

I went to school for advertising. I should have stuck with that career path.
Man that sounds like a cool place to work!

-We get decent vacation and sick days.
-We are closed between Xmas and New Years every year.
-We get three bonus summer days off that we can use whenever we want. They also tack on extra days off for the hell of it sometimes. ie: we are off on Friday and Monday for memorial day.
-My job is pretty lenient about working from home if need be.
-This year they announced that 12 weeks of maternity leave will be fully paid and will not go against your vacation days. I especially love this one as I am due in August.

Are they hiring lol

Little things you love about your workplace?

Old Job
Bagels daily (for brokers but we were allowed to take them and I would take the left overs home and freeze them for DH to take to work otherwise they went in the trash)
Kurig w/ the fixins
Awesome Christmas/Holiday Party
Summer Friday’s every other week. We would come in a half hour early to leave at like 2 on Friday
If you had a doctor’s appointment or left sick after 3pm, they wouldn’t dock you anything
Employees would do pot luck parties for holidays – Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas etc. (my current job wouldn’t want us all away from our desks at the same time)
Halloween Costume Contest – chance to win days off!
If you made it in during a snow storm, you would be given an extra day off – even if they didn’t make you stay the whole day.
Occasional lunches provided by the company (or other employees)

Casual Fridays
Summer Friday’s - Come in ½ hr early and close at 2:30 on Fridays
Usually close early (anywhere between 1-3) before a holiday. Only thing is they rarely tell us in advance WHAT time it would be.
They occasionally close an extra day (Christmas Eve, Good Friday)
Current job provides coffee and water cooler but anything else is up to you to bring in (sugar, milk, creamer, tea)
If we don’t abuse it, we can make up time if we leave early/come in late for dr appointments.

I would LOVE
Flexible hours
Bonuses
Occasional Lunch
SOMETHING for the holidays – bonus, lunch, raise
Better Maternity Leave
Work from Home
More vacation time (people have been here over 10 years and still get 2 weeks plus a day or so)

My job is pretty laid back... we can wear jeans everyday, as long as we are neat. We do not have a pension but we have a 401k policy that matches dollar for dollar up to a certain % contribution. We get 3-5 weeks vacation depending on years of service, but we are closed a lot of holidays. In lieu of summer hours we get 1 additional day off of our choosing each month during the months of May-Sept. We always get out early the day before a holiday closure. We have a yearly christmas party, and a yearly bonus (based on company profit). We have incentives for longevity -- if you are here 10 years you get 12 sets of movie tickets with free popcorn/soda -- the idea is to use one set per month. If you are here 15 years you get a $500 gift card. 20 years is a weekend trip, and $1500. 25 years is a $10,000 bonus and 2 extra weeks paid vacation (this is given with the intention that you take a trip). For 25 years they also usually throw a little party in the office with food/drink/games.
My company has a free yoga class weekly, and a meditation group that also meets weekly. They offer running and walking clubs, and also a farm to table program where you can order food from the farmers market direct to the office.
My company is also lenient on working from home if you have an issue.
Our maternity leave is 6 weeks full pay, 6 weeks at 50% pay.
We have free coffee (although yucky), milk, sugar etc in the kitchen. Vending. Free mini bagel mondays.
All in all a very good place to work.

Re: Little things you love about your workplace?

Even though we get things from our company, morale is very low among the "American" staff.
we have :
good health insurance
good 401K plan with company matching
good PTO policy
13 paid holidays
casual Fridays (but no jeans)
Casual Summer from week before Memorial Day to end of September
Keurigs with a large coffee and tea assortment, fresh milks.
filtered hot/cold water systems
vending machines with good stuff like yogurt, nuts, cold starbucks coffees and not so good stuff like chocolate, cookies and chips.

I don't usually attend the company holiday party.

I've fought and won for non-management staff to get annual bonuses. I'm non management, so it was a tiny victory. Tiny because our bonuses are based on the company meeting its goals for the year. So if the overstated goals are not met, we don't get bonuses. Haven't gotten one yet, but management still gets their bonuses.

It's difficult to get promotions.

We don't ever get to leave early before a holiday, unless we use some of our PTO.
Summer hours ? nope.
Work from home ? they make it difficult.

Most of the time I feel very under-appreciated.
There is a huge gender and ethnic gap here, and that is one of the main reasons for the lack of morale.
I've vested a long time at this company and am pretty much hanging on for a few more years until I retire.

Re: Little things you love about your workplace?

My mother's office does free dry cleaning pick up! You have to pay for the dry cleaning, but they come and pick it up from your office.

They have someone come in and do manis/pedis twice a week, again out of pocket, but you don't have to leave the office.

They have an outdoor terrace to eat your lunch in good weather.

They have a ping pong table on every floor.

They have summer Fridays- every Friday in the summer is a half day.

My office has free breakfast every payday, though I feel like it should be the day BEFORE payday. I just got paid, I'm not looking for your stale bagels.

We get to wear jeans every Friday in the summer- again nice, but it's often too hot in the summer to really make it worth it.

We also have 4 staff parties per year- 1 in the spring, 1 in the summer, 1 in the fall- we do different themes- The All Star game when it was hosted in NY, the Super Bowl, Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's Day, the Oscars, etc. And then we have a fancy holiday party in the winter.

Right now we're doing a 10,000 steps a day challenge. They give out pedometers and you submit the number of steps each week. They pull three names of the walkers and give out prizes to the names pulled.

ETA: We have discounted gym membership to the gym in the building. And we have a yoga instructor come in once a week- though you do have to pay for the class out of pocket.

We are also trying to start up a Farm to Table program, but it's expensive and they require a certain number of participants, which they haven't gotten yet.

Little things you love about your workplace?

Damn. I work in healthcare. Morale sucks. Everyone is stressed and on edge.
No raise in 3 years. Insurance more expensive.
Took away some sick days.
We get NO perks.
Healthcare also never closes so even though I am considered part of administration we don't get out early or get to take Christmas Eve etc. I really need to find a new job. Reading all of these posts I can't believe you guys have jobs that are actually like this
Wait I thought of one. We do have casual Fridays where we can wear jeans. Lol

Re: Little things you love about your workplace?

I work in the Dow Jones building in NJ; in their atrium in one of the buildings over there was espresso/cappuccino/coffee machines; free frozen yogurt and popcorn all day.

they are currently redoing the area and will now make it a self checkout cafe thing where we have to buy the stuff. Im going to miss the free cappuccinos!

we also get half day fridays in the summer as thats typically a publishing tradition; you work a longer day 45 min every day for early fridays.

we also do potluck luncheons 2x a year.
