i know everyone hates these, but how much to tip...
DH and i are going to a restaurant pre-opening dinner tonight. Its a trial run to make sure they are set for opening night in the upcoming weeks. it is for the owners, the investors and their friends and families.
Not sure if the food is complimentary or not, but if it is; how much would you leave as a tip?

Do you even tip at all in this circumstance? I have no clue. If the food is complimentary it will be hard to know how much to tip. Maybe just see how it goes that night and decide.

I don't think you tip in this situation. Like on TV when they have these dinners. They want to show everyone what they have to offer in the hopes you will return

If you're paying for the food, I would do the standard 20%.
If not, I would estimate what the tip would be and probably throw in a bit more because the food was free.
Waitstaff make shit wages.

I agree and I am against tipping people for everything except waiter and waitresses and anyone else who works solely on tips.
If the food is complimentary I would just try to estimate how much food it would cost and do 20% of that. if you are really unsure I would probably do at least $20.
once me and DH and friends went to a restaurant that just opened that DH uncle ran they ended up comping the meal we left I think $50 or $60 which I think was a little excessive

Regardless of whether or not the food is complementary, I would tip the waiters. If you have an opportunity, look at the menu to determine the prices and then tip 20%. I am sure the waitstaff are not making a huge salary and those tips are important to them.

I would think the waitstaff are getting pd and tipped for the service. Just like when I have a party the waitstff is pd by the place and tipped by me
though I do think this bpoard is tip happy tipping everyone for everything :)
