Anthony Geary to leave GH

ABC has confirmed that Anthony Geary, who plays Luke Spencer, is leaving General Hospital after 37 years.

Geary has starred on the ABC soap opera since 1978.

"Tony recently made his intentions clear that he would vacate his role of Luke Spencer this year, and it was a decision he did not come to lightly," GH executive producer Frank Valentini said. "Tony felt this was the right time to bid adieu to Luke Spencer, Port Charles and General Hospital."

Geary will remain on the show through the summer, Valentini said.

Reports say Genie Francis will return to the series to reprise the role of Laura Spencer for Geary's exit.

Geary has won eight Daytime Emmy nominations for his work on General Hospital, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series this year.

Of course, in the world of soap operas, the end is never really the end.

"The door will always remain open, so don't think this is the last you'll see of Anthony Geary or Luke Spencer," Valentini said.

This really isn't THAT surprising. After his messed up back surgery and extended leave last year, causing the wayyyy dragged out rewrite of history. I'm sure he'll pop in once in a while when ratings go down

Not surprised. But, he is always going to come back. I feel like he can't stay away.

I am ok with this.

As much as I always want Laura to come back I am always disappointed when she does. I wonder what her role will be? Will they kill him off and she is coming back for his funeral? Will they rekindle and he will move to Paris with her?
