Renting a car & car seats

How does this work? Especially if you have DC who are in two different types (in my case, convertible and booster). Does the car rental place rent them? Install them? Are they in gross conditions? Seems like a huge PITA to check them on a flight.

I would never use a rental seat. You have no idea what it's been through. It's not a pain to check carseats at all. I would bring your own

I'd usually bring the convertible & buy (or you can rent) a booster. A booster (backless) with a coupon can run super cheap & we did minimal driving, so no kids sleeping slouched.

Become familiar with putting car seats in & out before you go. It's really not that hard.

They do not install at rental places I've been to.

I just did this. We reserved the car online before going and reserved a carseat. You can choose infant or toddler seat. Toddler was a convertible carseat with 5 pt harness.
the seat was immaculate and honestly looked brand new. Dh had to install it.

We always rent a car seat from the rental car company. We get the 5 point harness for my DD but they always ask what type of seat we need. Every car seat we have rented has looked great. The brand has always been Cosco. My DH installs it in the car.

You can rent them, but I would rather bring mine. You do not know if the seat has been in an accident, the conditions of the seat, usually they do not include installation instructions (most seats are not correctly installed anyway.). I have seen and know one person who rented but they ran out of seats or had the incorrect type only. If you need a booster, I would get the bubble bum booster. It is pretty cheap, blows up so easy to deflate and roll and carry onto the plane. For the convertible, you can buy a bag with wheels and backpack type straps. Very easy to carry. You can gate check it or use it on the plane, not perfect but better than regular checking.

Re: Renting a car & car seats

We just went to Florida and didnt want to rent seats so we bought two bubblebum boosters and brought our convertible. We boxed with styrofoam and checked the convertible and the boosters. The boosters were cheap and very easy to use. I felt better boxing the convertible and the box nor the styrofoam were damaged so I felt fine with that.

You do realize that the seats are tossed around in the boxes before they even get the store that you purchase them from right? I've bought Britax, Graco and Cosco seats. None have had foam packaging. The only packing materials has ever been plastic bags covering the fabric.

The box is actually pretty good at protecting the seat.

Most manufacturers require replacing seats even after a small fender bender. Car seats are tossed, without boxes, down ramps and onto the ground when being loaded. How can that be safe? If they need replacing after a fender bender, they should definitely be replaced after checking onto a plane.

Even in the first 25 seconds of this video, you can see the car seats being tossed onto the ground. Nope. No thanks. I'll pass.

Purchasing a seat on the plane and using the car seat on the plane if it's a harnessed seat. Or if you know someone at your destination who can meet you at the airport with a seat, that could work too.

We flew when DD was 5.5 months old and we had family meet us at the airport with a car seat that another family member had recently used for their child.

Same here. They are very clean (as long as you are travelling in the US).

We rented a carseat once - it was very clean and they installed it for us (and did a very good job).

Other times we have checked them.

Same. I never had an issue when we rented and I also have never had an issue when I checked my seat.

IMO you never know what a seat went through before purchase.
