DD digging in diaper-should I worry?

One of my twin DD is 2 1/2, and we are potty training, no real method... Sunday, she decided that she was ready to sit. She's been great at peeing and pooping in the potty when she sits. Overnight, I had her in a diaper and this morning, she woke up, undressed and dug the poop out of her diaper and smeared a little of it on the dresser Chat Icon Chat Icon
I'm horrified. I'm not proud, but I yelled and slapped the back of her hand Chat Icon telling her that poop is yucky and we don't touch poop.
Is this normal? Is it a sign that something's not right? Was my reaction too harsh?

DD digging in diaper-should I worry?

I think it's common. I recall a kid at the daycare I used to work at who gave himself a mud mask with the poop in his diaper. He's now about 9 years old and a very intellectual, well adjusted boy (I'm friends with his mom on fb).

It's very normal. Kids at that age are very curious about their bodies, their functions, and the products it's produces for lack of a better term. It's usually a sign that they are ready to be potty trained. I don't want to make your feel bad but yes I think you over reacted. You don't want to shame her or make her feel like what she did was bad. I would say something like "we don't play with our poppies they go into the toilet". The bigger deal you make of it the more she will do it.

I'm worried only because she's so bright and usually well-behaved! No worries, I made sure to tell her that her actions were yucky, not her. I told her she was a nice girl and poop is yucky (not her). I just feel bad about slapping her hand (she wasn't hurt, just speechless shocked) Chat Icon

DD digging in diaper-should I worry?

Up until a week or so ago we had to keep DS1 in a onesie under his clothes and pjs so he wouldn't touch his poop. It started when he was 17 months and he's now over 2, so he spent about a year in onesies!. The first time he did it, he wound up eating it! He knew it was gross and would tell us he had yucky poopy on his hand. He also has bad eczema, so I think he often tries to scratch the dry spots on his butt and it didn't matter if there was poop in there.

It's completely normal and you acted the way most parents would. Sit down with her and explain why it's yucky and hope she doesn't do it again!

Totally normal. My oldest DD had a "fascination" with what was in her diaper around 20 months. It lasted for several months. Not fun at all.

My youngest knows poop is yuck and almost panics when she poops in her diaper. She will scream " stinky poop" (so cute).

I actually remember learning about this during my child development class. It's a totally normal and expected stage of development.

My sister did that when she was that age.

Smeared it all over the wall.

My dad still likes to retell that story.

Normal. She just didn't want it in there. Lol. I have gone through phases where I had to keep onesies on my kids or they will dig and remove diapers.

omg the crazy part is that they're always in a onesie, in pajamas, under their clothes, everything. I always liked a white onesie because I felt it kept the diaper in place. She went through the leg hole!

Thanks so much for talking me through this... I thought I had a weirdo for a minute lol
