Depends. If you need a seat at your destination, yes. I would never check, gate check, or rent a car seat.

We are flying with our 18 month old and purchased him a seat, and a new car seat since his is so bulky and wide. We always bought our oldest DS a seat, even when he was way under 2. I think about the plane that skidded in LGA - can a parent guarantee that they'd be able to hold their child tightly enough that they wouldn't fly out of their arms? I just couldn't chance it.

I would. It sucks paying the extra money but its so so much safer.

We bought a seat when dd was 17 months. Best decision ever. We flew with Her car seat and she slept the whole way and dh and I were free to not have to switch off holding her. Plus we had the whole row of 3 seats and were entitled to check a third bag.

Depends on your LO and how long you'll be on the flight. We didn't buy our boys a seat till they were 2. At 1 they wanted to sit on our laps the whole time. If it's a long flight it's worth getting even to have the extra room. If it's a couple of hours I don't necessarily feel like you need to buy them one, but like I said... depends on how your LO is.

I personally would never. We flew to California and didn't buy DD2 a seat. We are taking as many trips as we can with them while we don't have to buy DD2 a seat! But my kids would never sit in their car seats on a flight - even the older one wants to sit on our lap most of the time!

I would. DD took her first flight at 10 months and we bought her a seat. She sat in her car seat and slept practically the whole way. We did a few more flights with her before turning two and we always bought her a seat. We just found it easier.
