What's YOUR definition of a "bully"
DS is only in Kindergarten so dealing with some mean kids is all new to me. In preschool he was in the self contained class. Very small class and he had 3 teachers. The kids were all good and never had any issues. Now he's in main stream kindergarten and a much bigger class. Kids are starting to say mean things. A huge difference from preschool. Not saying I hear him being bullied or anything. He has lots of friends, but just surprised what a difference a year makes.

To me, a bully is someone who constantly/consistently picks on someone else. Or someone who convinces other kids (along with him/her self) to pick on someone.

Intimidation, manipulation, physical and mental abuse.
When a kid affects my child's environment in a way she feels she must alter her behavior to appease or avoid another.

I agree with both above. If anyone ever bullies my kids- I think I will go on a rampage.

I agree with this. My DDs sometimes come home and say "So and so was bullying me because I had applesauce for a snack" or whatever kid nonsense, but I think the term is way overused and I take it to mean consistent torment as described above.

Exactly how I feel. They use bully a lot, but sometimes kids are just kids and they'll be mean. DS will tell me a couple of girls said they didn't like the picture he drew, but doesn't mean they're a bully to him or even mean. I just explain everyone's taste is different and what you like doesn't mean everyone else likes as long as your happy with it.

I agree - I think it's it's extremely important to deal w/ the REAL bullies - but I think it's equally important to teach our kids how to deal w/ the realities of life - Kids can't be SO thin skinned that they can't handle ANYTHING - Some people kids, adults ....are just mean. You can't control everyone's behavior, youi can only control your reaction to it.

We overuse the word bully. A bully is someone who targets someone and repeatedly torments or bothers them.

This is practically the text book definition. The only thing you didn't mention is using power (perceived or real) to intimidate.

I agree completely. I cringe most times I hear that word because I know it's not being used appropriately. Teasing and bullying ARE NOT the same thing. I'm not saying that teasing is nice, but it is a fact of childhood. Every child will tease and be teased at some point. And please no moms chime in with "not my child." Nice kids tease too. I work with kids and see it all the time. But that is a far cry from bullying.

Re: What's YOUR definition of a "bully"
Bullying is intentional, targeted, repeated aggression or threats of aggression when there is a real or perceived imbalance of power, like older kid vs younger, popular vs not.
I think the term is very much over used now.

Agreed. Bullying is not once in a while but repeatedly.
