Ok...weird (TMI) question for those who breastfeed
with my DS he couldn't latch and i hardly produced any milk so i had to stop after 3 weeks.
This pregnancy my nipples have not stopped itching me!! i'm 35 weeks now and i didn't have this problem the first time. am i nuts to think maybe it'll work this time? i noticed my nipples are more protruding than last time...i dont know if the itching has anything to do with that.
i know...weird question. so if you breastfed...did you have itchy nips while pregnant?? i know its normal at the beginning but this is throughout the whole pregnancy.

I had super itchy nipples my entire pregnancy with my DS. Unfortunately, I was unable to produce enough milk to successfully breastfeed him.

Pretty sure that's just a pregnancy symptom and nothing more.
But I had a tough time with DC1 latching correctly and DC2 did awesome, so i hope that's the same for you.

I htink that's just a preggo symptom... BUT, DS was late premie, and I was very lucky to have amazing LC's at the hospital who gave us one-on-one care. He had a very difficult time latching and I wasn't producing, there were 2 things that they had me do.
1) I used a breast shield, used it I think the entire first month then was able to stop using it. I really helped.
2) They had me do the triple feed system. Have the baby at the breast first, with or without the shield, let them latch as best as they can, but don't let them tire out. Then give them a bottle, and then you pump. DS is 4 months on Saturday and I'm still bf'ing and pumping at work, that first week I barely produced 1 oz per day, by week 2 it had really come in. That system and the shield worked wonders for us, without them I don't think I would have been successful with BFing.

Nope. I'm breastfeeding but I have the same issue with low supply despite trying everything. Some people just don't have a good supply...it is frustrating. GL

I had super itchy boobs when pregnant with DD and had low supply and she wouldn't latch. I still pumped for 10 months and have whatever I could!

DEFINITELY NOT a bad mommy!!!! I HATE when people make others feel that way. I was just giving suggestions, I didn't realize you tried the breast shield back then. My BFF NEVER produced enough... by 1 month she was barely producing 2 oz per day, so she gave up as well. Don't make yourself crazy. I firmly believe in Happy Mommy Happy Baby!

i hope you didn't think i was coming off rude towards you! i just hate that freaken shield.  they never warn you that you may not be able to breastfeed. i even took a class and they made it like...ok so put your baby to the boob and then they'll know what to do. ta da! i stressed myself out over it and in the end i was much happier i stopped and Ian finally slept! i'm hoping this time it works but if not..im ok with formula. :)

That's basically what my BFF had, a class at winthrop. I don't know if it was because E was in the nicu or if it's just LIJ, but I had HOURS worth of one-on-one sessions with the LC. They had a LOT of tips and techniques to try that helped. About 3 weeks after he was discharged, the LC even called me to see how we were doing with bfing. Even once I started BFing well, he still would get 1 formula bottle / day - I heard HORRIFYING stories of babies that refused bottles or formula, and after he started on it, I didn't want him to lose the taste for it completely. Plus, my grandmother was in the hospital (still in rehab) ICU for a month so I was away a good amount when we thought she wasn't going to make it. I would just pump when he got that bottle, or right after.

thats a good idea to keep a bottle of formula in the mix. i already decided even if i can BF while I'm in the hospital i'm going to keep the baby in the nursery at night so i can sleep. i'm going to treasure those 4 days lol
last time i delivered at winthrop and this time its north shore manhasset. so maybe ill get better help here.

I was so unimpressed with Winthrop. I couldn't believe the lack of support my friend got. But I've also heard great things about it from other people.

I'm so jealous that you had such a great LC! I delivered at North Shore Manhasset and my LC was awful. She popped DS on and couldn't understand why I was crying in pain. Then she said maybe he was tongue tied (he's not at all). She was in my room a total of maybe ten minutes and I never heard from her again. I do understand that when I delivered DS the hospital was PACKED (I was induced and went in at 9:30p.m. on Thursday and was not put into a room until 7:00a.m Friday because there were so many women coming in that were already in labor. I was told they were turning away women that were scheduled to be induced on Friday), but it was the only part of my stay at North Shore that I wasn't thrilled with.
That being said, I absolutely loved my nurses. Every single one of them was great and very helpful. I had one that tried to help my get DS to latch. He did ok when she helped, but still couldn't hold the latch.

If a LO doesn't latch correctly, your milk supply won't be great. I didn't experience any itching during pregnancy and I successfully BFed my DD until 16 months. She would have gone forever if I let her.
I had a friend whose DS (first born) didn't latch but her DD did and she successfully BFed.
Even if your LO doesn't latch right away, pump with either the hospital pump or bring your own and try to get a good start.
