NICU high risk follow up

Anyone's child have this that can tell me what to expect? Is it similar to a regular well check up?

You mean with the developmental doctor? With my twins we had to do NICU follow ups and they checked their development. Height, weight, muscle tone...normal well visit check ups. When they got a little older they started checking other skills as well like hand eye coordination. I personally did not like the NICU follow ups and stopped going after their first year when they told me my babies were behind because my son wouldn't do what a stranger was asking him to do. They also told me to think about hormone shots for my daughter because she was short and barely on the charts. She's still short for her age but I would never give my daughter hormone shots. I am sure every NICU follow up is different so it depends on your doctors. The first few visits were just like regular dr visits for us though.

Huh. I really have no idea who we're seeing. It was just part of our discharge instructions to make this appointment for 3 months adjusted. We were in Stony Brook so the appointment is at SB pediatrics if anyone went there too. I was kind of hoping to be able to ask some questions about her birth since her ped doesn't seem to have a clue what went on. Maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up.

She's also being followed by ICAHPS so she should be having her second visit from that nurse soon.

We had a nurse come as well for a while to check on them. It sounds like they will be checking her development. To make sure she is where she should be for her adjusted age. We were at Winthrop so our doctors were affiliates of that hospital. Stonybrook may be different. I'm not sure how they work their development check ups. If this is her first visit then it should be similar to a regular check up. They should have all the information regarding her birth. The NICU doctors and nurses document every little detail. So you may be able to get your questions answered. Just know that if she continues to see this developmental Dr you know your daughter better than anyone. If she's not doing something she "should be doing" doesn't mean she's delayed. If there is a real issue your ped will let you know :) good luck!

My oldest was a preemie. We took her for a year to Winthrop peds for her follow,ups. They checked all her vitals and when she hit her milestones. They went by adjusted age, obviously. It was a little more in depth then her regular peds visit.

No one ever mentioned this for us, they were only concerned that he went to see his ped the day after he was discharged. He's 4 months next Saturday and only has his regular well-visits, no one even adjusts his age, he's moving along developmentally right along with his actual age (so far, smiling, giggling, cooing, eye contact, reaching and starting to grab for things, head held up nice and high, lifts chest, so close to rolling back to front too), he's just smaller (10-25% for weight and 50% for height). He was 4 weeks 1 day early, so late preemie.

Both of my DS were in the NICU at Stony Brook, and we followed up with the high risk clinic as well. Both were 34 weekers (not twins). DS1 had a shorter NICU stay and was only seen at the clinic a few times. I think they stopped following him at a year. DS2 was in the NICU for 3 months and has more needs so he still goes to the clinic at almost 2 years old. He went every 3 months, and now every 6. We like going bc we meet with some familiar faces from the NICU. We see Dr. Parek a lot. They check weight, height, ask questions, do some simple developmental tests, and that's about it. They like to follow the babies bc it helps them learn more about how they do once they leave the NICU.

Ds was born 12 weeks early and stayed at Stony Brook for 7 weeks. We saw the high risk clinic for about a year and a half, maybe 2 years. Every 3 months. They test milestones, ask questions. If something is delayed they will let you know or keep an eye on it. We stopped going because it was inconvenient and we have a high deductible health plan and it was one more expense I didn't need. We are glad by numerous specialists and just didn't see the point of this anymore.
