Question for those who took fenugreek?!

I just started taking them yesterday to build my supply and work on getting a freezer stash when I go back to work. When did you notice changes in your supply and how much more milk would you get while taking it? It seems I'm making a bit more than I was, but I'm unsure if it's too soon. I was supplementing in the beginning due to supply issues but haven't had to do this anymore for the last few days which I think is a good sign. Do you have to stay on this indefinitely or can you stop once your supply is good? The maple syrup smell is getting to me already and it's only been 2 days! Lol

Question for those who took fenugreek?!

Did you try just drastically increasing your water intake and eating 'real' (not instant) oatmeal? Once I did that I was a milk machine....I threw away freezer stash because I wasn't able to use all of it before it expired....I exclusively breastfed my dc for 14mths only pumping-she never latched. I never took the fenugreek because the syrup smell would make me crazy! Good luck!

I definitely could use more water, so I'm working on that. And oatmeal no; you can't add anything to it? Like sugar? Or honey? I should try that but I know it can't be instant.

Fenugreek and most supplements didn't really work for me. Hated the maple syrup burps from it!

The oatmeal must be made from steel cut oats. You can put whatever you want in it! I made a crockpot apple cinnamon oatmeal with steel cut oats. I also added flaxseed and Brewers yeast which are also supply boosters.

You can add whatever you want to the oatmeal as long as it is the steel cut oats. The water part made a huge difference for me. You can always add fresh cut fruit or lemons to help make it more pleasant if your not a fan of water. I also noticed I had to increase the amount of time I pumped....I was up to about 25 minutes to a half hour....the pump bra and the battery pack on the pump made it easy to get things done and pump at the same time.

thanks everyone and yes I do pump for at least 25 min usually. It takes a while for me to get a second letdown and sometimes I manipulate the pump to get even more out.

Question for those who took fenugreek?!

How often are you pumping?

I pumped a ton for my first and tried everything to increase supply, the only thing that worked was pumping more frequently.

Fenugreek did nothing for me but give me gas ;p. Drinking tons of water is what always boosted my supply and power pumping.

every 2-3 hours usually (whenever ds eats). At night I go a little longer since he's a good sleeper. I won't go past 4 hours though. Do you think I should increase frequency?

Traditional medicine mother milk tea helped me a lot and you need to drink tons of water. Like whatever your drinking triple it. I like the camelbek 32oz water bottles and you should try to drink 2-3 a day.

I spoke to many LC's and most will tell you that in order to make more milk, you remove more milk. Some foods/supplements will help but the only sure fire way is to nurse/pump as much as possible.
Also are you doing skin to skin still? That can also affect supply in a positive way.

the water thing really confuses me. I'm still getting around 70 oz a day of water. It's not like I'm drinking nothing. And every website I read said increasing water intake has no real correlation with supply. So confusing. It just says drink to thirst and monitor urine to make sure it's the right color.

I'm pumping every 2 hours so it's pretty frequent. Skin to skin unfortunately I can't do. Ds cannot latch correctly. It causes excruciating pain and he never emptied my breasts correctly so I end up with engorgement. I really wish I could. I've already met with 2 lc's who still said his latch was correct? Or at least he latched correct when they were around. No tongue tie either. I had it checked. It seems so hopeless.

Question for those who took fenugreek?!

My supply is low despite trying so many things. My left side hardly produces so its frustrating. I'm doing the mother's milk tea and fenugreek. I don't think either has made a big difference. I'm gonna try the oatmeal and upping my water intake. Sadly I'll never have anything to freeze so I won't have anything for when I go back to work. Good luck.

hugs!! I truly think some people just naturally have a low supply no matter what they do. I make just enough to feed ds. I sometimes maybe get an extra 4 or 5 oz a day, but that's it!!! It will never be enough to amount to anything to freeze. I really don't understand how some people are able to freeze so much.

This was me! I never had enough of a supply to have DD be on only bm so I definitely never had enough to freeze. I still pumped for 10 months! The most I produced in 1 day was 18oz but my average was about 9-10oz. Only one thing worked for me- domperidone. It's a medication that you can't really get in the US and it's not easy to obtain. I was able to get enough for 7 months and it worked pretty well. Pumping, especially EPing is really hard work, more so when you don't have a great supply.

This was my first DD...I know it's devastating and one of the hardest things I've had to go through. I know it's hard, but don't let this ruin your time home with your son. I felt my whole leave was focused on my DD's nursing issues and before I knew it, it was over.

Can you do skin to skin and not nurse? Just wear him in a Moby when you're topless (you'll be covered) and he will nap? This can help spark some production.

Have you made a batch of lactation cookies? There are recipes online. Send your DH out for the ingredients (oats, flax, brewers yeast) and whip up a batch. With choc chips they are SO good, and even if they don't help are a tasty treat.

Do the best you can...that's all our kids need from us! You're already a great mom to care so much about your DS's needs...you need to be a happy mom too!!

thank you!! I didn't know any skin to skin would work. That's interesting! I'll totally try that because I feel like I'm missing out anyway because he won't latch right. I never had any issues with my first dd. Nursing her was so much easier. And definitely will try lactation cookies! I need stuff to snack on in any case!

Thanks for sharing. 10 months is awesome. It's very frustrating but I keep on trying. I pump like once to twice a day and breast feed many hours throughout the day. He is always on me. I can't produce enough to make him happy. I never have that full feeling people describe. I have to be realistic. I'm sure once I go back to work in a month it's going to be even harder.
