My six-year old has a lot of wax in her ears and her peditrician is recommending taking her to an ENT to have them clean out her ears. I've tried those drops(forgot name-starts with a D) and then try getting the wax out but I can't. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I'm afraid to use a cutip and stick it in too far. Any suggestions especially since once she gets it removed, I don't want it to build-up again.

Thanks for any and all adviceChat Icon

Definitely do not use a qtip in her ears, ever. It can contribute to wax build up and compacting it in. An ent will use the vacuum tool and possibly flush it. I highly recommend dr. Anna Stern in Smithtown. She's on the corner of Terry Rd and 25.

Omg, that's who I made an appointment with today but wanted to ask aroundChat Icon. What a coincidence! I feel better now. Based on what you said, then how does one clean their child's ears? Also, is the procedure you said she'll likely do painful?

Thank you.

I'd never use a Q-tip. At one appointment, DS had a lot of build up in his ear and his pediatrician took care of it. Not sure if it was painful but my then 8 month old was not a fan.

it's not. The vacuum one may scare her because of the noise and the water one does have some pressure, but then it feels good. She may even just use the hook one that looks like a crochet hook to sweep it out. Ears are self cleaning. She will give you a "recipe" for drops you can put in her ears with two ingredients from around the house. If she gets water in her ear, you can put the blow dryer on, set to cool and dry her ears for a few minutes. Also, I will clean the wax that is out of the ear canal with a damp wash cloth after a bat, but that's it. I know it's frustrating seeing wax in their ears but it does serve a purpose.
