MMR and Travel???
So we are traveling to PR the week after my son turns 1 yr... I dont know if I should delay giving him the MMR till we get back or should I give it to him a week before we go? I am scared that he will have a reaction while we are away

MMR and Travel???
The MMR shot tends to have a delayed reaction. So your DS can develop a fever or any other symptom anywhere between 48 hours and up to 10 days.
DD had a fever 9 days later from it. I would delay if you can.

Dd didn't have a reaction,but some get fevers a few days after or even longer. I would wait until you're back. You don't want them feeling crappy while you're away.

I know that a lot of doctors are recommending giving it early if you are traveling, nationally or internationally. My cousin was just told to have their 9month old get it because she is flying to Florida. FLORIDA! If you have time, I would ask your ped about it and see if they would recommend doing it a month or two early.

Is there any way they would give it to him a couple of weeks before you go? This way if he has a reaction he will be over it by the time you go..

I would wait until after. I don't believe you can give it a few weeks before bc he might be too young for it. Both my kids had reactions a week later and were just miserable for a few days. Crying, fever and sooooo cranky.

THIS. It might end up being ineffective and then you will need to do it again.
I wouldn't give the MMR right before traveling. It is a very reactive shot and the last thing you want is to be in PR with a kid with a high fever and rash (which would occur about 7-10 days after if a reaction occurred).

My ped recommended getting it but now after reading the reaction can be 7-14 days after the shot I am concerned with him having a fever or worse while we are away. They will not give the shot until after he is 1 yr since it interferes with his antibodies. We are scheduled for him to get it 2 days after his bday but again we will be on vacation while he may be having a reaction.

PRECISELY, best to ask your pediatrician as IT IS recommended if traveling. And YES, they might need to redo after 1 year and then the regular booster years later. BUT, it is VERY common to administer prior to 1 year for babies that will be traveling. Prior to this insane measles outbreak it was recommended for international travel, however with this outbreak it's now being recommended for domestic travel as well.

I just went thru the exact same thing. We actually changed the dates off our trip bc of it I decided I wanted my DS to have the shot prior to travel. So now he will be getting it on his first bday (well day after) and we are traveling 21 days later.

we are actually doing the same thing. as soon as we come back from our trip, we are giving our DD the MMR, but if i give it to her now, she will undoubtebly have a reaction while on vacation

We went to St. Maarten when DD was 13 months. She didn't get MMR until 18 months. My ped suggested chicken pox prior to our trip so we did that a month before.

My DR doesn't give MMR until 16+ months so I think you should be fine if you go on vacation and get it when you come back.
