wwyd re sick 8mo

This is a 2 part question...

DS is 8mo and has a terrible runny nose and has been congested since Monday. Yesterday he got a fever (101.6) and he woke up again today with a fever.

1 - would you take him to the dr? i figure its just a cold and there is nothing they can do, but if he still has a fever tomorrow or sat should i call the dr?

2 - we are supposed to take a trip to MA to visit family on saturday (its not an overnight trip - 3 hours there and back in one day)...would you still go or reschedule?
ETA - we are visiting DH's 90yo grandmother so my concern is her getting sick since she has a weakened immune system

I think if there's still a fever, it's worth just calling - they might not be able to do anything but for peace of mind.

I would probably cancel the trip.

Being he is young I would call the dr if he has a fever. You never know, could have an ear infection. My son never gave any signs of an ear infection, never showed any signs of pain. He would get a fever and a slight cold and almost always he had an ear infection.

ETA: I would probably reschedule the trip too.

Re: wwyd re sick 8mo

Call your ped for peace of mind but fevers aren't usually worrisome unless they are over 101.4 and last longer than 3 days. We just went through this with DS two weeks ago (same age) and it was always low and just went away after 3 days and was likely teething. Edit - just saw that the fever is. 101.6 which is greater than 101.4 so you should call.

I would see how he is tomorrow and then decide on your trip. If he's fever free and in a good mood then you might still be able to go.

I would take him in to check fur ear infection. That way, you can start medication and probably still go visit family.

ITA.

Would definitely call the Dr.

As for the visit - as long as the fever is gone and he seems fine (and you want to go lol) I would go.

I agree with the others, my mom was just saying this weekend how she would take me in for well visits and the doctors would yell at her because I had ear infections (and showed NO signs of them).

I would call and take him in...fever could mean there is something else brewing instead of just the cold.

Re: wwyd re sick 8mo

with my son, i always called and still call the doc.

here's the thing - it's likely teething. my son always spikes a fever from that and then the drool starts, causing it to back up and then the runny nose begins as a result. all the symptoms of that make it look like he has a cold. and whether he does or not isn't even the thing bc the "he doesn't feel well" result is the same either way!

that being said, i call the doc for one reason - to check the ears!

because out of the five or so times this has happened to my son when teething bad -- TWO out of the five times the fluid backed up into the ears and he had an ear infection and needed an AB. it's so true when they say the ears, nose, and throat are allllll connected.

anyway, that's why i run him to the doc - just to check. they usually check the throat too to make sure there's no sore throat or strep. they did a culture a few times just to be safe :)

fever reducers help tons, orajel helps a lot, and then just aspirating with saline as much as possible. i used to flood that poor kid with saline and aspirate to get the congestion that builds up out. and then vapo-rub at night and the vaporizer as much as possible!!

ETA - as far as going on a road trip and seeing nanny - i wouldn't, personally, because when my son is not feeling 100% he's miserable and needs to be home, resting, with me there to comfort him and give him all the stuff mentioned above. but each kid is different - some can muddle through. you know your son best. i could never with mine though :)

I would not call the Dr. Its most likely a virus (DS had a similar one recently) and just monitor,. If the fever spikes then call.

As for the trip I would not gone.

DD (almost 6 mo) had a fever for a little less than 24 hours with a cough and congestion. We gave Tylenol and Ibuprofen to bring the fever down (which worked). Knew the cough and congestion would take longer to go away. Called the ped probably 5 days after the fever went away and they told us to give Bendaryl to help dry up the congestion. The cough/congestion wasn't bothering her during the day but was waking her up at night at least once a night.

As long as the fever goes away and acting normal I would probably still go. But I would probably call the ped just to give them a heads up and they would be able to at least let me know what should be done should it get worse.

If your dr has walk in hours than i would take your dc in... my dd started with a fever for 2 days then it spiked to 103 and cold symptoms... she ended up testing positive for the flu. Theres a lot going around all my friends kids are sick...

I think its better to be safe than sorry... they may not.give you antibiotics but its better to know what your dealing with and then youll know how to treat it.

As for going away i wouldnt go...
