studder speech evaluation

My DS is 3 yrs old. He will be 4 in April. I have been noticing the past few weeks he has developed a studder. It seems to be getting gradually worse as time goes on. He will say Can Can Can I play outside. Or something similar to that. The teacher mentioned it to me today also. He is in nursery school now. Is their someone to contact to get him evaluated. If he needs the help id like to start it asap.

Re: studder speech evaluation

I think at 3 you need to contact the school district to request an evaluation.

To my knowledge though, a stutter alone will not be enough to qualify for speech.

However, I would want to know why my child seemed to develop a stutter out of no where.

My DS gets speech for his stutter. He was evaluated through he district twice. It is hard to get speech for a stutter bc it can be developmental. I think you should watch it for awhile before calling for evaluation to see if it is just a phase. My neice also gets it for it. First time she was evaluated by EI she was denied through the district she qualified.

Speech Pathologist here....
It may go away, it may not. If you have any questions about it, I would call a speech-language pathologist who specializes in stuttering. Look up Lee Caggiano. She is great and will point you in the right direction. Her office is located in Syosset.

Also look at the National Stuttering Association and the Stuttering Foundation for some information.

Really i am surprised studdering wouldn't qualify for an evaluation. It just seemed to come out of no where maybe when he gets excited.

A stutter may not get you service, or it may. But it's definitely enough to request an evaluation.

Anytime you have a concern I would look into it. A stutter can be developmental in a 3 year old. also a whole word stutter is not as concerning as part word or if accessories are involved. For example if he said c-c-c-can i go out to play. accessories can be a an eye blink or mouth movement that they use to help them get over the block. Most importantly do not call attention to it. Best to just ignore it.

But call your district and they can evaluate him

this.

i stuttered bad as a child and still stutter sometimes as an adult.

can-can-can sounds like developmental...his brain is moving faster than his mouth. he should grow out of that.

c-c-c-can is a real stutter.

DO NOT correct him. it will make it worse. don't tell him to slow down and bring attention to it. maybe just take deep breaths while he's speaking and he can follow what you're doing...without actually telling him to breathe.

if he's still doing this months from now i would get him evaluated but from what you explain it doesnt sound like a problem.

Re: studder speech evaluation

My DS is 3.5 and does this all the time with whole words. He'll start a sentence sometimes 3 or 4 times before getting the whole thing out. I always chalked it up to him thinking too many things at once and not being able to complete the thought. Never would have thought to get him evaluated.

This was totally my DD. She has a ridiculous vocabulary and talks constantly. Sometimes I feel like she is thinking faster than she can speak. She had it on and off for a while. I feel like it happened during times of language explosions. Like she was learning so much, so fast, she had a problem getting it all out.
I read that it can be normal up to age 5.
It resolved on its own so I guess it was nothing.
