VERY shy in group settings?

My dc is so social. Talks a bunch considering only a yr and a half and is so outgoing at home.

I've noticed when we go to our classes (gym and music) it's like I have a completely different child who sits there quiet as can be, and even looks upset. As soon as we leave, happy as can be.

These are fun classes which we've taken since infancy. Could this be a cue to social problems or just shyness?

yup, just shyness. my dd was always like this. when we would go to a play place, she would do more watching and observing than doing.

it takes time, but she will come out of her shell.

I think it's pretty normal for the age. It can be shyness and also that there's so much to see and hear that they're focused on watching and listening rather than talking themselves. DD was like this, she was very verbal at home and never stopped talking but at classes she would take almost the whole hour to warm up. She's almost 3 and grew out of that a while ago. Now she doesn't stop yapping no matter where we go!

DD is like that to this day.
It takes her a long time to warm up.
Even at school- where she goes 3 days a week and has been at since 8 weeks old- she walks in very quiet and shy and speaks to nobody.
By the time I pick her up later, she is a chatterbox running around playing and talking to everyone.

It's definitely just shyness and a need to warm up.

My DS was the same. When I used to take him to library classes he would always be quiet and watching everyone else rather than interacting with the other kids. He has been in school now since Sept 5 days a week full day and has improved greatly with socializing. He was very shy and would just watch the kids at first but now plays with the other kids all the time. I think it is just a phase.

My DS is the same way. Is your daughter home or does she go to daycare? My DS is home with adults all the time (with the exception of his nursery school class) and I chalk it up to him not being aware of how to socialize with a bunch of kids in a setting because he's not really used to it.

My DD is 4 and is like that. She warms up eventually and can quickly become the life of the party. She is very, very talkative at home, but in public she gets shy. She has been this way since she is a baby. I've seen it get better with school and stuff but I think she is just a shy kid.

VERY shy in group settings?

Ds is 2 and this is him exactly! He's so vocal at home- speaks in full sentences, explains himself, plays a lot- when we go to classes at the library or have other people over, he gets super shy and shuts down. I'm guessing it's a mixture of curiosity and shyness!

DD is similar. At 25 months, she is starting to become a little more outgoing with a crowd. I wouldn't worry!
