Is it ok to fly with a 12 month old?
Did your pediatrician advise you that it's ok to take a 12 month old on a plane or were they against it?
I haven't asked my new one yet but my previously dr was fine with domestic travel. we were planning a disney trip for when my son is about 12 months. My daughter is dying to go back (she's 5.5)
Just curious what the consensus it.

Re: Is it ok to fly with a 12 month old?
We've been flying with the boys since they were about 6 months. We also go to Aruba every year and never had issues. I never heard of their being issues with flying with a 1 yr old. What's the concerns? Getting sick? Crying through the flight?
I think it's fine, but it's really how you feel. I think any doctor wouldn't advise against it.

Totally fine. My older DS flew for the first time at 10 months and my younger flew at 3 months and 6 months.

Its ok but not to be a debbie downer, my son contracted rsv when we flew to Palm Beach. We ended up having a terrible time as we ended up in the hospital. Luckily, he was 25 pounds so he was able to take the recommended dose of meds. I would fly but be careful... You dont what other people may have.

I'm sorry that happened. That's horrible. Poor guy.
To the other poster... I know it's scary to think what they could get from flying, but that wouldn't stop me from planning a vacation. They can contact illnesses anywhere... kids bday parties, mall, supermarket, etc. Just keep Lysol wipes out and wipe their hands. I also wipe the tray, arm rests and windows that the baby can touch. It's not a long flight. Keep him in the stroller till you get to the plane and hold him.

We flew when LO was 4 months and then again at 12 months. We looked into flights that we knew wouldn't be too crowded, kept hand wipes close by at all times, had a change of clothes ready for when we got off the plane, and gave a bathe as soon as we to where we needed to go. LO was fine and never got sick.

Re: Is it ok to fly with a 12 month old?
We flew with DS at 9weeks, 12 months and 20 months and he will fly again when he is 2. Dr didn't say anything and honestly, I probably would not have listened unless their was some crazy risk.
You can catch anything anywhere. My son had RSV, Coxsackie, Roseola pink eye, colds, ear infections, and the stomach virus 3 times. None of those times were from flying. I would not worry at all.

Re: Is it ok to fly with a 12 month old?
I think your friends doc said no until the mmr shot because there has been 50 outbreaks of the measles in the US. Another person just came down with it in Disneyland.
I'm not sure where other outbreaks have been, I just saw it as a pop up on Comcast the last couple days. But I would think this is why the doctor is cautioning against flights until they get the mmr. i think the air being recirculated instead of fresh air makes flights a little more worrisome. Granted I don't think this would deter me from flying with my kid who hasn't gotten the vaccine yet, as I really think you could get sick anywhere.

At this point, I would avoid it until a little older:

And I will say it again- WHY is measles suddenly making a comeback? Gee, um, because people decided to stop vaccinating for it. Mainly in part due to that vapid skank Jenny McCarthy and her quack of a Dr. Wonderful Polio will be next.

We started flying with our kids right after they got their first round of immunizations - with no issues (short trips at the end of my maternity leaves).
The only bad thing about 12 months is that they are mobile - and stubborn - so it might not be as fun for you but, it's possible!

Re: Is it ok to fly with a 12 month old?
I can't think of any reason not to fly with a kid at any age ........you can catch anything taking them out of the house that you could catch on a plane.
and for that matter, if anyone leaves the house and comes back, they could bring anything IN ..........
especially at a year old - it's fine IMO

It is fine. My pediatrician looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if I could take Dd on an airplane. He said there is NO reason to restrict air travel within the US or Europe. He did say he would advise against travel to Africa.

Re: Is it ok to fly with a 12 month old?
We went and celebrated my DD's first birthday in wdw. My ped had no issues with flying. I have not heard of any peds recommending against flying at 12 months domestically.
Could happen anywhere, but disney is big on stomach bugs. We got one on her 1st birthday our sat night there. Just a warning, but that happen at any age.

I was going to say...there might be some peds who might be making that general recommendation after the incidents at Disneyland. But I am not sure if that advice would be limited to flying or more of a general warning about very public tourist places like WDW. Anytime you fly, go to very crowded places in the city or whatever you take a "chance" of being exposed to whatever. We can't live in a bubble. You have to see what your particular comfort level is and go from there. But when my kids were that age, my ped did not have an issue with flying in the continental US.

It didn't even cross my mind to ask the ped but I'm generally not the type to run to my ped for every little thing. We took dd to Florida at 5.5 months with no issue.

Re: Is it ok to fly with a 12 month old?
I'd be worried about the current measles outbreak. I'd ask my ped about when you can get the MMR. Can you delay your trip until then? We did Disney a few months ago and even me (the germ freak that I am with frequent hand washing, not touching everything, purell, etc) still had all 4 of us come home with a really nasty stomach virus. Traveling definitely introduces TONS of germs.
